The Los Angeles Lakers moved back into a tie with the Mavericks for second place in the West standings. But the Lakers own the tiebreaker and would be No. 2 if they and the Mavericks end up with the same record. The Mavericks need a win Wednesday at home against New Orleans and a Kings victory over the Lakers in what could be the last NBA game played at Sacramento before the Kings' proposed move to Anaheim. The Lakers had a tough time beating San Antonio, which rested Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker. But they prevailed down the stretch against the Spurs' deep reserves. The Lakers did have some drama, however, as center Andrew Bynum went down with a knee injury of unknown severity. So to summarize, if our ciphering is correct here at blog central, here are the Mavericks' scenarios going into the final day of the regular season: If they win Wednesday and the Lakers lose, the Mavericks will be the No. 2 seed and play either New Orleans or Memphis in the first round of the playoffs. If they win and the Lakers win, the Mavericks are No. 3 and will play Portland. If they lose and Oklahoma City loses, the Mavericks are No. 3 and will play Portland.
