And he’s holding out hope that he might still be part of the ride come playoff time. Butler, who ruptured a right knee tendon Jan. 2 and needed surgery, was a visitor to practice Tuesday. He was there to offer support to his teammates, who clearly are struggling after six consecutive losses. Butler spoke to media members for the first time since his injury and said that if the Mavericks could make a deep playoff run, he’s not ruling out playing again this season. “They say four months, four to five months,” Butler said. “That’s what I keep yelling. Give me four months, and I’m good. I’ve had this before when I was 15. I know exactly what to do. {ellipsis} I just need some time.” Four months from his surgery would be the first week of May, which is usually when the second round of the playoffs start. The 6-7 forward, who was averaging 15 points per game when he went out, said he plans to be on the bench with his teammates tonight when the Mavericks play the Los Angeles Lakers. When he is cleared to begin traveling in early February, he plans on being with the team on every road trip to offer as much moral support as he can. “We still do have something special,” he said. “Our relationships are second to none. I believe we have what it takes in this locker room. That’s why I crawled over here and support the squad.” Butler will be a free agent at the end of the season. There also is the possibility that the Mavericks could use his contract in a trade between now and the Feb. 24 deadline. None of that is his immediate focus. “You want to put that aside,” he said. “That will take care of itself. … When I start rehabbing and everything, then I’ll get ready for free agency.
