Carlisle says Caron Butler injury 'potentially serious'; Mavs lose third straight MILWAUKEE – The injury situation is getting bleak, but the scene on the Bradley Center court Saturday night was far, far worse. When Caron Butler went down – clutching his right knee before he even landed – the situation did not look good. And then it got more depressing, even moreso than the 99-87 loss the Mavericks would absorb from the Milwaukee Bucks, their third consecutive setback. "To watch a teammate go down on the floor and pound the floor like he was, it's just terrible," said Dirk Nowitzki, himself fighting a sprained knee. "We're all just pulling for him now." That may not be enough. Coach Rick Carlisle termed Butler's injury "potentially serious." Butler stayed in Milwaukee with family – he grew up in nearby Racine, Wis. - and will return to Dallas today to be examined by team physician Dr. T.O. Souryal. Clearly, it does not look like a short-term injury, although nobody was divulging any diagnosis Saturday. If there is ligament damage, it could threaten Butler's season. X-rays were taken at the arena, but the results were not released. "We're afraid that it's potentially serious, but we won't know anything until Dr. Souryal gets a look at it," Carlisle said. "We'll find out tomorrow where things are at." The somber attitude in the locker room suggested that the news is bad. Carlisle said Butler's attitude showed through, however, even during the injury. Butler went down with 2:55 to go in the first quarter. He was going for a rebound on a shot that Jason Kidd made. As soon as he hit the floor, he was in obvious pain and his teammates and coaches could tell that this was no ordinary bump or bruise. But he pulled himself off the floor and walked to the locker room without assistance. "With the potential seriousness of the injury, the guy got up and walked off," Carlisle said. "That's one of the most impressive things I've ever seen in basketball. He's a man's man. And we all have an awful lot of respect for him. We're going to hope and pray that it's something he can come back from sooner than later." Added Tyson Chandler about Butler walking off the court: "They don't call him 'Tuff Juice' for nothing." Butler was quickly joined by his wife, who was in the stands with their kids, then was escorted to the locker room. Butler's is the latest in a long stretch of injuries, none of which were deemed particularly serious until Butler's. It left the Mavericks in a serious manpower bind against the Bucks, and likely will again tonight against the Cleveland Cavaliers. First, Nowitzki and Shawn Marion (right thigh) didn't even suit up against the Bucks. Then Butler went. Lastly, Ian Mahinmi got clocked above his right eye by a Corey Maggette elbow and the blood flowed, even though no foul was called. That left nine players to try to keep Maverick magic alive on the road. It didn't happen as they lost for the first time after eight consecutive wins away from home. The road has been more comforting to them than a date with the Clippers, but not this time. Shorthanded, the Mavericks got a career-best 29 points from J.J. Barea, who probably is taller than only one player in the league – Milwaukee's Earl Boykins, who is 5-7, and threw in 26 points to lead the Bucks. It was mini-NBA ball and the Mavericks were second-best. The loss, which turned when Andrew Bogut and Boykins combined for seven consecutive points that put the Bucks up 85-77 midway through the fourth quarter, was only the sub-story of this game, however.
