Mariners rookie LHP Bobby Madritsch, terrific in victories over the
contending Red Sox and Angels, could end up a closer. "I know we will have
some arguments in the future about his role," Mariners G.M. Bill Bavasi says.
"Whitey (Herzog) always said to build a staff from the back -- start with a
closer so you can play your 27 outs vs. their 24. Bobby seems to have the
mental makeup to close." The Mariners' decision could hinge on whether LH
closer Eddie Guardado, a pitcher whom Madritsch resembles in both velocity
and style, makes a successful recovery from a shoulder injury that ended his
