Led by frontman Paul Draper, the band released three albums during their lifetime - Attack of the Grey Lantern (1997), Six (1998) and Little Kix (2000) - as well as the posthumous sessions for Kleptomania in 2004. Draper has popped up here and there since and devoted Mansunites set up a petition urging him to release some solo material. He later struck up an unlikely Twitter friendship with the name-borrowing South Central LA freestyler Mansun, prompting us to shoot him over some questions. Q:You recently teased the possibility of some solo material if there's enough fan support - how do you feel about your fans setting up a petition like that? Paul:"The petition came from me playing on the Marc Riley show on BBC Radio 6 with a band I really love called Menace Beach who will be big in 2014. "The petition for me to do my own record came from that as I've concentrated on collaborating with other artists since Mansun split - Skin from Skunk Anansie, The Joy Formidable, my latest project The Anchoress and now Menace Beach. I'm going to collaborate with them on their debut album as well, I think they are great. "However, Mansun fans want to hear my own material, so they've set up a Facebook petition, and it's obviously got my attention and I'm taking it very seriously now. I'm really excited that so many people remember Mansun fondly, the band seems to of had a renaissance recently for some reason. So in the new year I'm going to very seriously consider releasing something, let's just see." Q:What's The Anchoress all about? Paul:"The Anchoress is a collaboration between me and singer Catherine Davies, known as Catherine AD. We started out trying a few songs and it mushroomed into a full album made at my London studio, The Kitchen. Its performed by a great band we put together and written by Catherine and I. "I'm now excited to be working with Menace Beach in the new year, they are my favourite new band so I'm very lucky new, exciting musicians keep wanting to work with me, I feel blessed in that regard. "The Anchoress has 12 songs on the album and they are some of the best I've ever written. There aren't enough classic songs around at the moment, The Anchoress has them on the record in spades, Catherine and I are very proud of this record. If you like Mansun, you'll like The Anchoress I think!" Q:From Suede to the Stone Roses, EVERYONE seems to be reforming these days, but you've all-but ruled that out for Mansun - why is that, and would you be up for it if Chad was game? Paul:"Well myself and drummer Andie Rathbone speak occasionally and would be fine with doing something with Mansun again as long as it was something worthy of putting it back together again. We've even discussed hypothetically how something could be done. "For instance both of us feel our second album Six was much misunderstood at the time, in the Britpop era, and we both agreed we would view playing that record in its entirety for the first time as something we could both be proud of and would like to tackle. "We would like to make a fifth Mansun album, we would like to finish off the fourth album, Kleptomania - many, many things we feel we could accomplish over a series of years. The problem lies with the band's guitarist, Dominic Chad, who has said he does not wish to reform Mansun. So unfortunately we cannot do it. "It's more of a shame for the fans. Along with the Manic Street Preachers we had, and still have, one of the most dedicated fanbases in British rock. So that's where it stands, Dominic Chad knows where I am if he would like to play in Mansun, but as far as I know he doesn't want to do it so that's where it stands at present." Q:Do you have a favourite Mansun memory or moment from your time with the band that you'd like to share after all these years? Paul:"Haha, I couldn't possibly tell you the best ones!! I loved meeting and hanging out with David Bowie, he gave me a cigarette, I smoked it with him on a beach in Italy and we talked music. He loved our first album. Paul McCartney asked me to do a cover of 'Helter Skelter' when I was having lunch with him and George Martin one day at Air Studios, and I refused. "That was typical me back in the day though, not even Macca could get me to sing a cover, and I never did. I hung out with Prince in a private members' area of a nightclub in Tokyo. Let's just say he didn't have much to say. Great memories being part of that whole thing, seeing Jarvis and Damon and Liam around, great days!" Q:What would you like to think the lasting legacy of Mansun is? Paul:"What I'm most proud of about Mansun is how many new artists tell me they loved the band. Blood Orange aka Dev Hynes has just covered a Mansun song on his new album and tells me how much he loved the band. James from Pulled Apart by Horses text me the other day to say he loved Mansun. "Menace Beach, The Joy Formidable, Catherine AD, all these people I work with are not really for business reasons. They just like Mansun and want to work together, pick my brain and do something together. It's great, I'm like the godfather of new bands now and very proud of that." Q:What do you think about the current state of British guitar pop? Paul:"Poor, it's never been in a worse state, we need something new to happen to guitar music, a new movement, a new great band. The last mega band was the Arctic Monkeys and they've been around for a decade. It makes me want to get my guitar out and show 'em how to do it!" Q:Are you surprised at your continuing, enduring Twitter back-and-forth with South Central LA freestyler Mansun? How much fun do you think he's having with it all? Paul:"I haven't a clue what @OFFICIALMANSUN is all about, I dont know if he's serious or not. He says he's working on a Mansun featuring Mansun collaboration apparently. He's been quiet for a few days so we may hear him explode with a smash hit single, who knows!" Q:You have a giggle with the guns 'n' bitches attitude of lots of modern rap, but are you a fan of any other hip-hop? Would you seriously consider a crossover track (you worked with Arthur Baker after all...)? Paul:"I would absolutely work with a hip-hop artist if I rated their music. I love hip-hop, rap, whatever. When I was a teenager all my mates were at the indie disco swooning around to The Smiths. I was at soul and r'n'b nights dancing to James Brown, Public Enemy, NWA, De La Soul - so beats, breaks, r'n'b, Prince, soul has always been in my musical DNA." Q:The 'Being a Girl' video launched the career of one Danny Dyer - how do you feel about that fact, knowing what we know now? Paul:"I would like to apologise to the entire world for giving Danny Dyer his first break in showbusiness. I have very few regrets in life but if I could go back and recast that video I would. I'm sorry. To all fans of EastEnders, I apologise in advance. "I did however resurrect the career of Tom Baker on that album so I should get brownie points for that, it all evens itself out.
