David de Gea 6
Newcastle threatened on the break and Javier Manquillo beat De Gea with ease.
Denied Joelinton at 2-1.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka 5
Poor at both ends and effectively starting by default. Regularly erred by
crossing without looking and sloppy in his own half.
Raphael Varane 7
Impressive again, even if he was only up against Joelinton. Should have crowned
his debut with a goal but header flashed wide.
Harry Maguire 5
Needlessly dived in and left United open for Newcastle to break and equalise
through Javier Manquillo.
Luke Shaw 7
A subdued first-half before he burst into life in the second, charging
forward to assist Cristiano Ronaldo's second goal.
Nemanja Matic 6
Often disciplined and was able to advance amid Newcastle's reticence. But
could not hold the fort on his own and United were loose.
Paul Pogba 7
A quiet performance and he left the risk-taking to Fernandes slightly further
ahead. Claimed another assist for Bruno Fernandes. and then for Jesse
Lingard.
Bruno Fernandes 7
Guilty of trying too hard at times, which meant ceding possession. His play
was more polished after half-time and he scored magnificently.
Mason Greenwood 6
On the fringes until his harmless shot was spilled by Freddie Woodman and
Ronaldo tapped in. His most subdued display of the season.
Jadon Sancho 5
Was urged to move higher up the pitch but never got going on his full home
debut. Substituted just after the hour.
Cristiano Ronaldo 8
Endured an uneventful first-half until Woodman parried the ball into his
path. Put United ahead again six minutes after Manquillo struck.

Excellent goal.
Anthony Martial 5
Late cameo.
Donny van de Beek 5
First appearance of the season.
Manager 6
Picked the correct team and discovered that, even against reticent Newcastle,
Matic cannot hold the fort on his own.
