The year-end charts presented in this special double issue will be summarized in a separate email. Also, since I don't have complete information for the unpublished 01/05/2002 issue (which tracks sales during the pre-Christmas week), information from that week will be included in the 01/12/2002 report. Overall album sales climb another 21.5% to 27.7 million (12/10-12/16), gearing up for next week's pre-Christmas rush. GHV2 (Platinum) --------------- | TW LW WO PK(#) | -----------------------------|----------------------------| Billboard 200 | 30* 28 5 7 | Top Internet Album Sales | 11 17 5 10 | -----------------------------|----------------------------| The newly released limited edition adds to the mix this week, though we do not know how many copies it has sold. The notable leap on Internet Album Sales seems to suggest that many fans may have pre-ordered it on the Internet. In the end, "GHV2" earns its first post-debut bullet with sales of 116,278, an 18% increase over last week. Note that this jump is still below the market growth rate. Indeed, in such a strong week, the only unbulleted titles in the top 50 are three Christmas albums, six albums that are in their second or third week, and two stand-out losers known as Kid Rock and Michael Jackson. Drowned World Tour 2001 (DVD/VHS) --------------------------------- | TW LW WO PK(#) | -----------------------------|----------------------------| Top Music Video | 9 9 5 1 | -----------------------------|----------------------------| GHV2 Megamix (Promo) -------------------- | TW LW WO PK(#) | -----------------------------|----------------------------| Hot Dance/Club Play | 38* NEW 1 38 | Hot Dance Breakouts/Club Play| -- 2 1 2 | -----------------------------|----------------------------| VH-1 Monitor | ? 36 4+ 11 | -----------------------------|----------------------------| The megamix is this week's Hot Shot Debut in clubs, entering one rung above Kylie Minogue's international smash "Can't Get You Out Of My Head." Kylie had beaten Madonna on last week's Breakouts chart, which ranks five new titles bubbling under the top 50. Even though the two are listed here together for convenience, please note that the club play results from the dance remixes while the video uses a megamix of album versions. The video monitors are squeezed down to half-size (20 entries) in this issue, so it is not known if the video would have appeared between #21 and #40. Impressive Instant (Promo Only) ------------------------------- | TW LW WO PK(#) | -----------------------------|----------------------------| Hot Dance/Club Play | 31 19 10 1(2) | -----------------------------|----------------------------| "Instant" looks likely to match the 11-week run by five of Madonna's last 11 club hits. If it does fall off next week, however, it would become Madonna's shortest-running club hit since "Love Don't Live Here Anymore," aside from the unpromoted, import-only "Sky Fits Heaven." What It Feels Like For A Girl (D)(M)(T)<> ------------------------------------------ | TW LW WO PK(#) | -----------------------------|----------------------------| Hot 100 Singles Sales | 74* RE-ENTRY 30 9 | Hot Dance/Maxi-Singles Sales | 8* 9 34 1 | -----------------------------|----------------------------| Music (Single) (C)(D)(T)(V)(M)(X)<> (Platinum) ----------------------------------------------- | TW LW WO PK(#) | -----------------------------|----------------------------| Hot Dance/Maxi-Singles Sales | 13* 18 70 1(11)| -----------------------------|----------------------------| Perhaps GHV2 advertisements and year-end recaps have rekindled some interests in her singles? "Girl" sells 819 copies, 32% more than last week, and "Music" increases by 27%. In comparison, overall singles sales are up by only 12.3%. The Immaculate Collection (Diamond) ----------------------------------- | TW LW WO PK | -----------------------------|---------------------------| Top Pop Catalog Albums | 49* -- 348 8 | -----------------------------|---------------------------| "Immaculate" makes a remarkable return to the catalog chart with sales of 12,744, up 27% from last week. This is the first time the album makes the catalog top 50 around Christmas time. FYI, there are 27 holiday titles on this week's catalog chart. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Hot 100 ------- Mariah Carey's double-A-side charity single "Never Too Far/Hero" scans 16,500 and enters Singles Sales at #3. Debuting at #81 on the Hot 100, it poises to become her first single to miss the top 30, excluding a #83 placing of "All I Want For Christmas Is You" around Christmas 1999. 2000's "Crybaby" which, like "Never Too Far," failed to crack Hot 100 Airplay, sold 54,000 in its first week. Patriotism is still a major theme on the charts. New York policeman Daniel Rodriguez's recording of "God Bless America" moves 8,000 units to bow at #8 on Singles Sales and #99 on the Hot 100. Aaron Tippin's "Where The Stars And Stripes And Eagle Fly" is the Greatest Gainer/Sales and jumps to #20* on the Hot 100, Tippin's first top 20 hit. On Hot Country Singles & Tracks, where "Fly" is #4*, Alan Jackson's "Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)" ascends to #1* after only six weeks. LOOKING BACK: In 2001, as many as 13 acts had their first taste of the #1 spot. Doing so with solo efforts were chart rookies Crazy Town, Alicia Keys and Nickelback and chart veterans Outkast and Mary J. Blige. Veteran Shaggy nailed a one-two punch with "It Wasn't Me," featuring newbie Ricardo "RikRok" Ducent, and "Angel," featuring old pal Rayvon. "Featured" stints also gave Mystikal and Ja Rule their first #1 hits. Finally, the group project "Lady Marmalade" added a #1 single onto Lil' Kim, Mya and Pink's resume. In addition to these 13, Joe collected his first #1 as a lead artist (he was previously featured on Mariah Carey's "Thank God I Found You"). In 2000, seven acts scored their first #1s by themselves (Lonestar, Aaliyah, Vertical Horizon, Matchbox Twenty, 'NSync, Sisqo and Creed), and one as a featured artist (Product R&B). 1999's list of first-time-champions was Latin/pop heavy, with Britney Spears, Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Destiny's Child, Enrique Iglesias, Santana, plus featured artists Rob Thomas, Dru Hill and Kool Moe Dee. The calendar year 2001 generated 14 new #1 singles, less than 2000 (17) but even with 1999. Meanwhile, 2001 is the first year in the SoundScan era where no single monopolized the top spot for eight weeks or more. During 2001, three singles ("Butterfly," "Fallin'" and "I'm Real") had non-consecutive runs at #1. The last time this happened was way back in 1966 - four singles did so that year. 1979 could also count, as that year's last #1 "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" gave up and then regained the pole position in January 1980. ("I Will Survive" and "Hot Stuff" already had non-consecutive runs in 1979.) Billboard 200 ------------- Creed's "Weathered" becomes the first 2001 album to spend four weeks or more at #1. Shaggy's "Hotshot" and The Beatles' "1" each sat at the top for that long, but both were released in 2000. There were 25 different albums hitting #1 in 2001, the fasting turnover since 1997 when the tally was 29. Intensely promoted, No Doubt's "Rock Steady" lands at #9 with sales of 254,787, improving by 26% over 2000's "Return Of Saturn." Other debuts include Mobb Deep (#22/140,000), Joe (#32/102,500) and the soundtrack to "How High" (#43/78,500). With still more than one week to go until Christmas, seasonal offerings are already losing luster. "Now That's What I Call Christmas" drops #3->#6, while Christmas titles from Barbra Streisand, Destiny's Child and Toni Braxton slips #15->#24, #34->#47 and #119->#132, respectively. Maverick Records ---------------- The soundtrack to "Not Another Teen Movie" sold 11,718 copies out of the gate and barely missed last week's Billboard 200. It did grab a #19 spot on Top Soundtracks, where it slides to #20 this week with a 34% sales loss. Since the movie already opened during this tracking week, the album appears unlikely to turn around and redeem itself. Taken from the soundtrack, Marilyn Manson's "Tainted Love" holds at #34* on Modern Rock Tracks and #32 on Mainstream Rock Tracks. -------------------------------------------- A "*" (bullet) beside a chart position marks that a single or album registered a notable gain in sales or airplay or chart points. Debut titles automatically carry bullets. Video charts and Top Internet Album Sales do not award bullets.
