Last week, Madonna managed to rank higher than Shakira and Jewel, who also debuted two weeks ago. This week those two ladies win back the upper hand, occupying #18 and #21 slots on the Billboard 200. In the Internet realm, however, Madonna still holds an edge over them. Rob Zombie, who debuted just a few hundred copies behind Madonna, has fallen to #44 on the Billboard 200. Aside from Ja Rule, featured on "I'm Real," the only male presence in the past eight months was Usher and... Usher. While "U Remind Me" topped the chart with help from a commercial single, "U Got It Bad" is this week's new champion based on airplay strength. It moves to airplay #1 with 135 million audience impression, compared to 125 million for Nickelback's "How You Remind Me." Usher had one #1 hit before this year - "Nice and Slow" in 1998. ALL BY HIMSELF - With "U Remind Me" and "U Got It Bad," Usher had two consecutive singles hitting the jackpot with no help from others (duet or "featuring"). This is, believe or not, a rare feat for male artists. The last male act to do so was Boyz II Men - "On Bended Knee" dethroned their own "I'll Make Love To You" in late 1994. Since then, Puff Daddy, Notorious B.I.G., Santana and Shaggy have all managed back-to-back #1s, but with much help from others. Enrique Iglesias hit #1 with "Bailamos" and "Be With You," but "Rhythm Divine" peaked at #32 in between. JA JA JA - For the second week, Ja Rule has three entries in the top 20. "Livin' It Up" featuring Case drops from its #6 peak to #8. Jennifer Lopez's "I'm Real" spends its 19th and likely final week in the top 10. Finally, "Always On Time" featuring Ashanti jumps #20->#13* and wins Greatest Gainer/Airplay. The last artist to pull this hat trick was Master P, who saw two of his own singles and one that featured him gather in the top 20 in the 05/30/1998 issue. In March 1993, Whitney Houston held down three spots in the top 20 for three straight weeks with three hits from "The Bodyguard" soundtrack. Ja Rule's three entries also crowd the top 20 sector of Hot 100 Airplay. Whitney's aforementioned three singles did so for two weeks. Janet Jackson was similarly a triple threat in September 1993 with her first three singles from the "janet." album. HOT OR NOT - Five weeks ago I updated you on five new songs from pop's hottest names. By now, "Drowning" and "I'm A Slave 4 U" have peaked at #28 and #27, respectively. Destiny's Child's "Emotion" is retreating after touching #10, while 'NSync's "Gone" stalls at #11 for a fourth week, losing its bullet. (Isn't it odd? "Gone" is a bigger R&B hit than "Emotion," and "Emotion" peaked higher than "Gone" on Top 40 Tracks...) The hot picks, it seems, are light and groovy tunes like Pink's "Get The Party Started" (#6*) and Shakira's "Whenever, Wherever" (#9*), both in their eighth week. The new one to watch? No Doubt's reggae-infused ditty "Hey Baby," #52* in its second week (#24* on Top 40 Tracks). SIBLING RIVALRY - Janet's "Son Of A Gun," featuring Missy Elliott, P. Diddy & Carly Simon, climbs #33->29* and steps over Michael Jackson's "Butterflies" which moves #32->#30*. "Butterflies" is far ahead on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks, #7* compared to "Gun's" #29*; but "Gun" is also 28* on Top 40 Tracks. On the Hot 100, "Gun" is Carly Simon's first top 30 entry since 1987. Paul McCartney's "Freedom" debuts at #97, his first Hot 100 entry since 1997. Dating back to the Beatles' "I Want To Hold Your Hand" in 1964, his career chart span is now 37 years, 11 months. Even his solo career spans an impressive 30 years, nine months. "SMALL" POINTS? - As I've mentioned many times, there are "small market" radio stations that are not monitored by BDS for airplay charts, but do contribute to the Hot 100. They don't seem to be all that "small" when it comes to the following titles on this week's chart: Hot100Airplay Hot100 -------------------------------------------------- Five For Fighting "Superman" #18* #15* Creed "My Sacrifice" #16* #17* Alicia Keys "Fallin'" (T) #15 #18 Aaliyah "Rock The Boat" #14* #19* Alicia Keys "A Woman's Worth" (T) #17* #20* -------------------------------------------------- (T): 12" vinyl available; the rest are airplay-only. While the 12" vinyl for "Fallin'" can explain why it's ahead of "Rock The Boat" on the Hot 100, all the other discrepancies are results of "small market" radio play. Billboard 200 ------------- The Beatles' "1" jumps #146->#73* and sells 31,000, a 78% increase. Not a happy event, however, as it reflects the public reaction to the death of George Harrison on 11/29. Two Harrison albums and two Beatles albums enter or re-enter Top Pop Catalog Albums, led by "All Things Must Pass" at #26. They sell a combined 46,000 copies. Overall album sales experience a post-Thanksgiving drop of 15.9%. At 18.7 million, it is 9.8% below the same week last year. Year-to-date album sales is also down, driven by a 6.1% business loss in music chains and independents (which still make up 67.3% of the total market). Sales are up by 3% at mass merchants and 39.2% at non-traditional outlets, which include Internet sales and TV direct sales. Most top albums see their sales approximately cut in half. Creed retains #1 with sales of 417,500, a 18% margin over "Now 8." Two hip-hop albums debut in the top 10. At #3, Ludacris's 282,000 more than doubles his previous best week. At #7, Busta Rhymes's 185,000 is 10.6% higher than what his last album did in July 2000. The 2-CD set "The Concert for New York City" sells 77,000 to place #27. The concert scored high ratings on VH-1, and several cuts from the concert are in heavy rotation during the channel's video programming. Smash Mouth opens at #48 on sales of 40,000, Most bulleted non-debut entries are Christmas titles, including the Greatest Gainer, Mannheim Steamroller's "Christmas Extraordinaire" at #8*. That album also snaps "A Day Without Rain's" 53-week streak at #1 on Top New Age Albums. Off to a slow start is MTV's "TRL Christmas" compilation, new at #169. -------------------------------------------- A "*" (bullet) beside a chart position marks that a single or album registered a notable gain in sales or airplay or chart points. Debut titles automatically carry bullets. Video charts and Top Internet Album Sales do not award bullets.
