CHICAGO — The way the Detroit Tigers are playing these days, hitting coach
Lloyd McClendon is wondering if he'll soon have any friends.
The Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday 6-5 in 10 innings to
extend their winning streak to 12 consecutive games, their longest since
1934. No MLB team has had a longer winning streak since Oakland's 20 in a row
in 2002.
"We're bound to lose sometime," Tigers right fielder Magglio Ordonez said,
"but when you're hot, you're hot."
The Tigers staged their 38th comeback by scoring three runs in the ninth
inning, with Carlos Guillen, starting for the first time in 10 days, driving
home the game-winner in the 10th.
"Every day we know what's going to happen," Guillen said, "we win."
The Tigers (87-62), who have won a major-league leading 22 of their last 26
games since Aug. 19, can clinch their first division title since 1984 this
weekend. Their magic number is three, with White Sox catcher A.J. Pierznyski
calling the Tigers not only scary, but "the hottest team I've ever seen."
"The way we're playing," said Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera, hitting
.500 in his last nine road games, "I'd be scared of us too."
They've become a little fearful of McClendon, who has not changed his
underwear during the streak so as not to jinx it.
"Guys are getting a little uncomfortable standing next to me now," McClendon
said. "They believe they can't be beat. So if this thing keeps going, it can
ugly."
Then again, if the Tigers keep winning, the sweet smell of champagne will
overpower McClendon's stench.
