Tracing the Origins of Hainan Min: History, Contact, and Speech Community

Abstract
Hainan Island has been home to peoples of different ethnic backgrounds since
ancient times, giving rise to a diverse and vibrant cultural and linguistic
landscape. Although textual records are relatively scarce because of the
island’s remoteness and its predominantly non-Han population until the tenth
century CE, important clues can still be gleaned from historical documents,
shedding light on past interactions among different ethnic groups. In this
talk, I bring historical records into dialogue with linguistic evidence and
recent genetic and anthropological research to examine the formation of the
Hainan Min dialect and to consider what these sources reveal about the speech
community from which this distinctive language variety emerged.
