The data below is from Tonkawa, an American Indian language of Texas.
There are three sets of words, each built on a stem with a single phonological
represetation. The affixes attached to these stems are [o?] "THIRD PERSON
SINGULAR SUBJECT", [we] "THIRD PERSON PLURAL OBJECT", and [n] "is...ing".
(?=glottal stop)
(a) notox 'hoe'
(b) notx-o? 'he hoes (it)'
(c) we-ntox-o? 'he hoes them'
(d) notxo-n-o? 'he is hoeing (it)'
(e) we-ntoxo-n-o? 'he is hoeing them'
(f) picen 'castrated one, steer'
(g) picn-o? 'he cuts (it)'
(h) we-pcen-o? 'he cuts them'
(i) picna-n-o? 'he is cutting (it)'
(j) we-pcena-n-o? 'he is cutting them'
(k) netl-o? 'he licks (it)'
(l) we-ntal-o? 'he licks them'
(m) netle-n-o? 'he is licking (it)'
(n) we-ntale-n-o? 'he is licking them'
1. Formulate three vowel deletion rules that ae needed to derive
the surface representations.
2. Give derivations(i.e. underlying forms, rule applications, surface forms)
of 'hoe', 'he hoes them', and 'he is hoeing (it)'.
