All of a sudden, the NBA's much-discussed disconnect between players and fans never seemed quite so small. "You've got to fall back, fall back," Malone yelled at Odom, who was bodying up Milwaukee Bucks forward Marcus Fizer on defense. The biggest question at the end of the Lakers' 100-96 victory over the Bucks had nothing to do with the players on the floor and everything to do with the 41-year-old sitting in cowboy boots and a cowboy hat, spitting sunflower seeds all game long. Malone sat 50 feet away from the Lakers bench, close enough to talk with Kobe Bryant and referee Jess Kersey, but far enough removed to leave his status for this season a mystery. He spoke in gestures once again afterward -- a nod to the question of whether he was close to full health after undergoing off-season knee surgery, a shrug to the question of whether he would be back in January, the new timetable for his return. Lakers coach Rudy Tomjanovich said he hadn't spoken to Malone in months. Bryant said he talks to Malone nearly every day in the Newport Beach neighborhood they share, though Bryant has not done any lobbying on his team's behalf. "I'm sure he wants to come back," Bryant said. "If he didn't want to come back, I guess that would mean that he didn't love the game. If you love the game, you're going to want to come back all the time, no matter how many times you retire." Earlier in the week, Odom said he "hears but doesn't listen" to fans. He took in what Malone had to say, but still tried to go chest to chest with Fizer and picked up a foul. "Usually when I'm guarding those bigger guys, my skinny man complex comes in," Odom said. "It was just one of those where I should have listened to the vet." Malone now has appeared at a training camp practice, an exhibition game and a regular-season game since his non-retirement. His agent, Dwight Manley, said Tuesday that Malone would not make his return -- should he return -- until after Jan. 1 at the earliest. "I know he loves the game," Odom said. "He's done so much for it. I know that his competitive juice is forever flowing. Whenever he wants to come back, we'll be waiting with open arms." What Malone watched, meanwhile, was the Lakers (7-5) once again blow an early lead before pulling away from the Bucks in the fourth quarter. Bryant led all scorers with 30 points, played sensational defense against Michael Redd and hit four free throws in the final minute to secure the victory. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Lakers got the defensive stop they needed when Bryant deflected a pass by Redd with 42.6 seconds remaining and was fouled by Desmond Mason. Bryant drained the two subsequent free throws to put the Lakers in front and in control 97-92. Milwaukee (3-6) lost its fifth consecutive game but got 26 points off the bench from Mason and 18 points and a career-high 11 assists from Mike James. Redd finished just 1 of 8, however, and had as many points (6) as turnovers. There also was a lesson to be learned for the Lakers, who waited until the closing minutes Sunday and Tuesday to dispose of Chicago and Milwaukee. They will have no similar luxury Friday night with the Sacramento Kings coming to town. "The name of the game is win, win, win," said Odom, who scored 17 points. "Of course you want to get better. But a win, you take them any way you can get them in this league." The Lakers built a 13-point lead early in the second quarter but gave it all back by halftime. It was the fifth time in six games they have blown a double-digit lead -- a total of 84 points worth of blown leads in the past 12 days. Not that the Lakers were all that concerned afterward. They have won three of those games and lost two. "There's no one team in this league that's heads above everybody anymore," Caron Butler said. "You can't pick one team that's going to be dominant and is just going to show up and win games. The lead's going to change but as long as we close the games, that's what's important." --
