http://tinyurl.com/245b4yj Goal.com selects the best XI from a dramatic second round of the Primera Division... By Paul Macdonald Formation (4-3-3) Goalkeeper Manu (Deportivo) The reserve goalkeeper only faced Sevilla’s strike-force as a result of a shoulder injury to first-choice glovesman Daniel Aranzubia, but he grabbed his opportunity, quite literally, by producing a series of superb stops to keep the Rojiblancos offence at bay. A spectacular reflex save from Alvaro Negredo was the highlight, but Martin Caceres and Diego Perotti were also left frustrated by the 24-year-old, who was making just his third appearance for the Riazor outfit, and he is unlikely to have many better. Defenders Ricardo Carvalho (Real Madrid) The Portuguese international made his home debut for los Blancos, and not only did he score the only goal in a slender 1-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu against Osasuna, but his commanding presence in the heart of defence ensured it was a lead that they never appeared in danger of relinquishing. He may be one of the elder statesmen in this Madrid team at 32 years of age, but his experience and maturity will be of great use, and here he proved his proficiency at both ends of the pitch to hand Jose Mourinho his first three points as Real Madrid boss. Noe Pamarot (Hercules) Facing a Barcelona side whose prolific record, particularly at home, is legendary, an immaculate defensive performance is a must, and Hercules stopper Pamarot produced a man-mountain display to keep the Blaugrana at bay. Keeping a clean sheet at the Camp Nou should be commended – after all, no opposing defence managed to keep out the Blaugrana in the entirety of last season He threw himself into blocks, headed everything that the home side could throw into the area, and can be just as proud of the clean sheet as goalkeeper Calatayud. A tough, uncompromising defensive performance from the former Portsmouth and Tottenham Hotspur man. Diego Godin (Atletico Madrid) We may be just two games into the new season, but already Godin looks to be an inspired purchase from fellow Primera Division outfit Villarreal. With the tough-tackling Uruguayan at the heart of their back four, Atletico instantly look more organised and difficult to break down, and for 88 minutes Athletic Bilbao couldn’t get past the 24-year-old and his defensive companions. He shackled the threat of Fernando Llorente superbly, and despite the tall striker netting near the end, Godin and his team-mates had the last laugh with a well-deserved 2-1 win that sees los Colchoneros top of La Liga after two rounds. Godin produced a superb display to keep out Athletic Bilbao Claudio Morel (Deportivo) The experienced Paraguayan only arrived in La Liga this summer after spending his career in Argentine football and was faced with the daunting prospect of shackling the spritely Jesus Navas as Sevilla looked to secure two wins out of two. But the 32-year-old needn’t have worried. He frustrated the Spaniard by sticking tight to him as often as possible, and in the end Navas was forced to roam in order to escape his clutches. Ultimately, Antonio Alvarez’s side could not break through, and Morel played a pivotal role in ensuring a clean sheet. Midfielders Mesut Oezil (Real Madrid) In what was another stuttering display from los Blancos, the stand-out individual on the pitch was the young German. Oezil illuminated a dull match with neat touches, inventive build-up and looked generally comfortable in his new surroundings, on his home debut. The 21-year-old’s inch-perfect through pass to Cristiano Ronaldo led to Ricardo Carvalho’s winning goal, and, as the team improve, expect Oezil to be at the heart of everything good Jose Mourinho’s side produce. Quincy Owusu-Abeyie (Malaga) The much-travelled young Ghanaian international looks to have found a temporary home with Malaga, on this performance at least. The 24-year-old showcased his lightning pace during a first half performance that Real Zaragoza simply had no answer to. His run to set up Juanmi for his second goal covered all of 60 yards, skipping through challenge after challenge, and then added his own name to the scoresheet by rolling home the fifth goal with aplomb. With Owusu-Abeyie, Juanmi and Eliseu in their attack, Malaga could be a threat to many La Liga defences this season, and coach Jesualdo Ferreira will be hoping for more displays like this from the former Arsenal kid. Borja Valero (Villarreal) The ex-Real Madrid playmaker was vital in Mallorca exceeding all expectations last season, and already proves to have been a shrewd acquisition for the Yellow Submarines. Against Espanyol Valero was at his influential best, drifting infield from the left hand side, and the Blanc i Blau were unable to keep track as he controlled the match. His intelligent run and cutback helped Rossi open the scoring, before his own vicious left-foot shot arrowed into the top corner and set the tone for a comfortable evening’s work for Juan Carlos Garrido’s team. If Valero can continue to produce this calibre of display, the Madrigal outfit could well enjoy a fruitful campaign. Rossi and Valero worked in tandem for Villarreal Strikers Nelson Valdez (Hercules) The enterprising forward produced the performance of the week from the unquestionable result of the week, in an evening anyone connected with Hercules will never forget. The summer signing from Borussia Dortmund was slightly fortunate to bundle home the opening goal, but there was no luck involved in his sweet strike 10 minutes into the second half which silenced the Camp Nou. Valdez incessantly worked for the team, and looks already to have formed an understanding with David Trezeguet. It was fitting that the 26-year-old was the man to humble the champions. Giuseppe Rossi (Villarreal) The diminutive Italian this week denounced reports suggesting he is seeking a move to Serie A, and how the Yellow Submarines will want to keep him should he produce performances such as this on a regular basis. The former Manchester United striker scored a perfectly-timed shot that started the rout over Espanyol at El Madrigal, and finished off an excellent all-round performance by coolly rolling home a penalty kick. When Rossi plays well, Villarreal play well. Juanmi (Malaga) A star could well have been born amidst the rain of goals in Aragon on Sunday afternoon. Malaga romped to an incredible 5-3 win over hosts Real Zaragoza, and their 17-year-old striker was one of the stars of the show. Juanmi only made his debut for the Andalucian side in January, but this weekend represented his proper inauguration into Spanish football. He scored two goals and provided an assist to team-mate Fernando as the Boquerones ran riot. Remember the name; this young man could have quite a season ahead of him. Manu Godin – Carvalho – Pamarot – Morel Owusu-Obeyie – Oezil – Borja Valero Juanmi – Valdez – Rossi Honourable Mentions Diego Forlan (Atletico Madrid) Jaime Gavilan (Getafe) Alberto Botia (Sporting Gijon) Fernando (Malaga) Vicente (Valencia) Raul Tamudo (Real Sociedad) Ricardo (Osasuna) --
