They were of the belief that a win for Sevilla in the Copa del Rey final would result in them being granted a place in Europe's second tier competition as the place allotted to the Copa del Rey does not go to the losing finalists if the winners have a European spot secured. UEFA have sent a statement to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) clearing up the matter by stating the potential scenarios of a win for either Atletico or Sevilla. According to Marca, that statement contradicts Villarreal's previously held belief, stating that if Sevilla win the Copa showpiece on Wednesday night, having already booked a place in the UEFA Champions League, their Europa League spot will go to the losing finalist, in this case Atletico Madrid. Atletico will, as Europa League holders, be granted direct access to the group stages of next year's competition whereas the Copa del Rey winners would ordinarily have to enter the final preliminary round of the competition.
