To create the roster openings, the Knicks waived Corey Brewer a day after
releasing Kelenna Azubuike. Neither ever played a game as a Knick. Brewer,
the seventh overall pick in the 2007 draft, was acquired in last week’s deal
for Anthony. He was inactive in his three games with the organization.
“He wanted to play and I couldn’t promise him that he was going to play,” D
’Antoni said. “I had no idea. His group thought it was better that he go
somewhere where he can play.”
The Knicks acquired Azubuike in last summer’s sign-and-trade deal with
Golden State that sent David Lee to the Warriors. Azubuike never played after
knee surgery over the summer.
“From a personal standpoint, you hate it,” D’Antoni said. “He was great,
but he’s just got a ways to go yet on his rehab.”
