7:05 PM, November 10, 2010 ι By MARC BERMAN Knicks president Donnie Walsh told The Post on Wednesday he will undergo hip replacement surgery next week and will be away from the Garden for about two weeks. Walsh has put off hip replacement surgery for six years but doctors have told him he needs the surgery to be able to walk again in the wake of his spinal-cord surgery over the summer. Walsh injured his hip in Paris last spring while scouting the World Championships. Walsh now has no choice but to undergo the surgery and feels this will make him stronger and less likely to retire soon, he said. The news, however, occurs just days after Isiah Thomas talked publicly of taking over for Walsh when he retires, has been speculated because of health mconcerns. Walsh is using a walker. Knicks owner James Dolan has until March to exercise the option on Walsh's final year. "I need to have the hip surgery done in order for me to be able to walk with perfect balance,'' Walsh said before the Knicks faced David Lee and the Warriors. Walsh said the rehab is extensive but he can still report to work. While he is laid up, he will still be working, he said. "I still have a brain and I still have a phone and I'll be in touch with everyone,'' Walsh said. Walsh said he timed the surgery for when the Knicks are on a week-long West Coast trip, beginning Tuesday in Denver against Carmelo Anthony.
