Sports Jul 24, 2:35 am EDT GETTING INSIDE The Knicks entered this offseason looking to add two all-star players to their roster as the main pieces in a long anticipated makeover. They landed Amar’e Stoudemire(notes) but missed out on the big fish that was LeBron James(notes). The offseason isn’t over yet. Neither is their quest for a second star. And another option might be emerging. Chris Paul(notes) is making it known that he wants out of New Orleans and reportedly has a wish list of preferred destinations, with the Knicks said to be right at the top. The Knicks certainly have interest in the three-time all-star, an MVP candidate only three seasons ago. The only problem is that Paul isn’t available—at least not yet. The Hornets are going through transition at every level of the franchise’s hierarchy, from an ownership transfer to a new general manager and a new head coach. Paul is under contract for at least two more years (he has an opt-out in 2012), so the Hornets are under no pressure to move him. If or when the Hornets do decide to move their unhappy franchise player, the Knicks can be expected to act quickly to make an offer that would include some of their top young assets (newly acquired Anthony Randolph(notes), for sure), cash and even a willingness to take back another big contract, such as Emeka Okafor’s(notes) four years and $52 million left on his deal. Will it be enough to interest the cash-strapped Hornets franchise? The better question is, will it be too much for the Knicks, who also have to consider the more immediate, more affordable availability of Tony Parker(notes) and/or Carmelo Anthony(notes), both of whom could be free agents in 2011? The Paul situation doesn’t appear to be imminent, so it is not expected that the Knicks will be forced to make an aggressive move here. It might buy them time to assess their other options, especially with Anthony, who has a three-year, $65 million extension on the table to stay with the Nuggets. But he hasn’t signed it yet, and there are strong indications that Anthony might take a risk and pass on it to explore free agency or push for a trade to the Knicks. The interesting connection in this is that Paul, who was a guest at Anthony’ s wedding on July 10 to television personality LaLa Vazquez, announced at the reception that he wanted to get Anthony to come with him to New York and join Amar’e Stoudemire on the Knicks so they could “form our own Big Three.” Paul is close friends with LeBron James, who left Cleveland to join Chris Bosh(notes) and Dwyane Wade(notes) in Miami. So maybe the Knicks didn’t get LeBron, but they still might benefit from his influence. NOTES, QUOTES ‧ Amar’e Stoudemire was told by the Knicks that he would not be permitted to play for USA Basketball this summer in the FIBA World Championship. A disappointed Stoudemire was ready to open training camp in Las Vegas on July 20 when he was given the news. The decision was made when the Knicks found out Stoudemire’s insurance policy, which transferred to New York from the Phoenix Suns and has one year remaining, did not cover his surgically repaired knee. The Knicks are in the process of getting coverage on the final four years of Stoudemire’s five-year, $100 million contract and are also looking to get supplemental insurance on the knee, which underwent microfracture surgery in 2005. ‧ LeBron James didn’t come to New York, but the buzz was still enough to benefit the Knicks, who sold out their season tickets for the 2010-11 season by mid-July. According to CNBC.com, the team actually sold more than 3,400 season-ticket packages before July 8, when James made his public decision. The last time the Knicks sold out their season tickets was in 2001-02. Quote To Note: “I think if people don’t consider me a good player, they’ re stupid.”—Danilo Gallinari(notes), when told of the perception that LeBron James didn’t choose the Knicks because the roster lacked talent.
