DALLAS - You don't have to be Tracy McGrady to know that his
surgically-repaired left knee is hurting more than a little.
Now, 22 days into his Knick career, the one-time high-flying perennial
All-Star who made a name for himself by attacking the basket has been
reduced to playing on the floor and rarely driving to the rim.

Sometimes, he can't even operate at the lowest of altitudes, as was the
case when he didn't play at all in the fourth quarter of the Knicks' loss
in Memphis on Friday. But that, McGrady admits, comes with the territory.
Still working his way back from microfracture surgery 13 months ago, and
after playing very little in six games for Houston in the first part of
the season, he accepts the pain as a necessary evil during his comeback.

when he made only one basket in five attempts. "Certainly, I miss being in
close games. Down the stretch of games and just being able to take over a
game … you know, I miss that. I miss that competition."
He misses being the Tracy McGrady of old.

"Right now, I'm just sitting there, saying, 'damn' and shaking my head,"
he said. "It eats me up. But there's nothing I can really do at this point.
It's quite difficult, going from where I used to be, to seeing how I am out
there right now. It's difficult, really."

Not that it's killing the Knicks, even as they have lost nine of 12 games
since his arrival.
No matter if McGrady comes around over the last 17 games, or not, they still
are getting exactly what they wanted when they made the deal at the trading
deadline with Houston and Sacramento. When his $23 million comes off their
books in July, they'll have enough cap space to accommodate two maximum-salary
players.

As the Knicks look to buy LeBron James and one other marquee free agent like
Chris Bosh, McGrady will also be shopping this summer, for a new team. He
seems resigned to that after arriving in New York thinking he could re-sign
with the Knicks. As much as he's struggled in his 11 starts for D'Antoni, it
is difficult to imagine that any team will be interested in his services.

During his audition, McGrady has been rendered to a near-stationary player
who almost exclusively looks to set up teammates. But when he goes on the
open market, he will still be seen as a player who needs to dominate the ball
and have someone's offense run through him. That's always been his game and
that is not changing.
But the Knicks have seen only flashes of that as he's been largely reduced to
a spectator on the floor. "I just don't think he has his legs," D'Antoni
said. "It's been tough."

The question is, if he can't slash and explode and resemble the scoring threat
that once ranked among the NBA's top scorers, then where is his appeal?
"Going into next season, I don't think I'll have any problems I'm having right
now," McGrady said. "I just need to be healthy. It's so hard for me to attack
the basket. I go in there and try to explode and nothing happens. It's just
going to take time to gain that confidence in my leg, which I really don't
have right now."
现在问题就是，如果不能解决他在NBA有名的伤病史，那他能去哪？
McGrady说：「我不认为我现在的问题到下一季还会在。我只需要保持『健康』。
