Doing so meant giving up Patrick Patterson, Cole Aldrich, Toney Douglas and, in a separate deal with the Suns, Marcus Morris, while also acquiring Francisco Garcia and Tyler Honeycutt. Robinson was up and down in hist brief stint with the Kings, yet it’s hard to see why Sacramento would give up on such a talent so ear…oh, never mind, it’s Sacramento, where logic goes to die. Further they are wildly successful in the pick and roll, as they score .88 points per play in Ball Handler plays (good for first overall) and 1.04 ppp in Roll Man plays (8th overall). That’s the good side of Houston’s defense. The bad can more aptly be described as ugly. Opponents score .89 ppp against Houston in post-up plays, which ranks the Rockets 28th overall in the league. And, while transition offense is a great strength of Houston’s, their transition defense is leaks more than a source at the trade deadline, as they give up 1.22 ppp in transition, landing them 28th in the league in this category. Synergy shows Robinson to be an asset on the break, as transition situations account for 16.9% of his offense, scoring 1.03 points per play on 60% shooting. 19.2% of Robinson’s offense comes from offensive rebounding situations, in which he scores .73 ppp, though at a less-than-ideal 37.3% clip. The most troubling number about Robinson in these situations is his inability to take care of the ball, turning the ball over a whopping 36.8 percent of the time. Robinson’s rebounding numbers – 10.6 rebounds per 36 and a 16.5 rebounding percentage, landing him just outside the top-20 of the league, according to Basketball-Reference – are promising. Defensively, however, Synergy does not paint a pretty portrait of Robinson, especially in the context of Houston’s needs. As the defender of the roll man in pick and roll situations, Robinson surrenders .85 ppp, and allows his opponents to shoot 44.4%. In post-up defense, Robinson’s opponents shoot 56% against the chiseled rookie forward, scoring one point per play. Further, opponents score against Robinson in these situations 51.2% of the time, worse than Houston’s 45%. Nor do they mean that these are the only facets of his game which need work. The loss of Patterson also means a more compact half court offense for Houston, as no remaining Houston power forward, save for Parsons at the 4, has the ability to stretch the floor.
