Hassan Whiteside is that rare 7-footer who sneaks up on people. Even as an
emerging prep standout in Gastonia, N.C., a lush, leafy suburb west of
Charlotte, he got lost among the trees. Once, out of frustration, his mother
charged into the sports department of the Gaston Gazette newspaper and, in so
many words, introduced her son.

"She (Debbie) came in and said, 'My son goes to school here,' " related
sports editor Gabe Whisnant. " 'He plays basketball. My family still lives
here.' It was real interesting. I think what happened was … they moved
around a lot, so we really didn't know anything about him."

Whiteside remains an intriguing open book with blank pages. He dropped to the
Kings (33rd) after interviewing poorly at the Chicago predraft combine, but
even that seems a bit of a stretch, considering everything he accomplished
during his freshman season at Marshall. He led the nation in blocked shots
(5.3) and triple doubles (three). He fouled out once.

He received all-conference and All-America honors, and along with that body –
including a 92-inch wingspan – is an expansive repertoire of skills.

Though his passing is shaky, Whiteside doesn't just dunk. He isn't just big.
Exceptionally mobile for someone with his size and length, he converts
mid-range jumpers, scores off angles and bank shots, and because he's almost
ambidextrous, he uses both hands effectively around the basket.

Defense, though, is both his strength and his passion. His favorite play is
to swoop in from the weak side, and again while using his off (left) hand,
swatting the ball downward until he hears the thud of the hardwood.

"Hassan has gifts you can't teach," said Darren Tillis, the former NBA player
and an assistant last season at Marshall. "He can make freak plays, jumping
off the wrong foot. He is still very raw, but that kid will do anything you
tell him.

Whiteside, who is back in town after attending various camps in Houston and
Las Vegas, half-jokingly mentions that as late as the eighth grade, he was a
promising 6-foot wrestler.

"Rassling," he says, in his soft Southern accent. "I loved it."

A major growth spurt prompted his switch to basketball, but because his
family relocated frequently for economic reasons, he never stayed anywhere
long enough to solidify a reputation.

Living with his mother and six siblings, he briefly attended Hunter Huss,
Ashbrook and Forestview high schools in Gastonia. He moved in with his

in Newark, N.J., but became unsettled by the violent area and returned to
North Carolina, graduating from Hope Christian Academy.

After flourishing during an additional year at prep school in Lenoir, N.C.,
he moved on to Marshall, where he averaged 13.1 points and 8.9 rebounds, and
presumably, more meals than blocked shots (5.3). Fortunately for the Kings –
and Whiteside's career – his menu of choice is heavy on the chicken breast,
fish, fruits and vegetables.

"I try to eat right and take care of my body," said Whiteside, who was 24

going to be a seven-footer,' and it didn't look like it was going to happen.
Now look at me."

Whiteside, 21, throws up his hands and laughs. He is soft-spoken and a bit
shy, and his mannerisms suggest someone who is seldom in a hurry. With no
major travel plans on the agenda, he has spent the summer trying to add 20
pounds to his gangly 235-pound frame, with a particular emphasis on
strengthening his lower body.

On the court, he participated in Tim Grgurich's camp at UNLV and spent a week
with Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon in Houston, working on everything from
passing out of the post to the "Dream Shake."

According to Tillis, who recently followed former Marshall head coach Donnie
Jones to Central Florida, Whiteside was one of his sharpest students. He
introduced his star freshman to a video clip of Jack Sikma, for instance, and
days later, saw his center stroking stepback jumpers from the baseline.

"The kid will do whatever you tell him to," said Tillis. "The speed of the
game, that's something he has to work on.

Whiteside, who plans to live alone, is renting a condominium near Arco Arena.
If he gets lonely, he says, he visits Tyreke Evans. He's also eager for
DeMarcus Cousins to arrive; the two became acquainted earlier this month at
the NBA Rookie Orientation seminar in New York. Turns out both had conducted
background checks well before the draft.

"I had looked DeMarcus up on the Internet," said Whiteside, with a grin, "and
he said he did the same thing. There weren't too many other good big guys out
there.
