DeMarcus Cousins is the best thing to happen to the Kings since the
transformative offseason of Vlade Divac, Chris Webber, Peja Stojakovic and
Rick Adelman. Yes, the best early Christmas present since then. And, no, it's
not the mind-numbing desert heat, which on Friday approached 114 degrees.

At the Las Vegas Summer League, Cousins is receiving more accolades than
double teams – and earning every one of them. The rookie has turned more

scouts and assorted league executives publicly and privately drooling and
suggesting the Maloofs have scored the real deal.

the game's top two or three centers before his 21st birthday.

offensively (5 of 18 from the field) against the Toronto Raptors and produced
an improbable triple double that featured 10 fouls, Cousins displayed many of
the same skills and a passion reminiscent of a young Webber.

Though he lacks Webber's length and explosiveness, Cousins, who still must
improve his conditioning and shed a few pounds, anticipates and extends for
rebounds, then caresses the ball. He throws no-look, one-bounce passes to
cutters, outlets passes that trigger fast breaks and taps rebounds to
teammates for dunks. And he does all of this with an ease and instinct a la
Webber that can't be taught in a locker room or found in a textbook.

It didn't seem to hurt his emerging popularity, however. The kid draws a
crowd. After the game, he spent 25 minutes on the concourse of Cox Pavilion,

stretched to 150 or so, featuring mostly youngsters. His mother, Monique,
stood with the Maloofs and other Kings officials, watching from a distance.
