It's not a surprise that the NBA looks ready to suspend Sacramento Kings
forward Chris Webber for lying to a federal grand jury. It now, however,
appears that the suspension will be longer than initially thought.
The Sacramento Bee reported in Sunday's editions that Webber will face a
suspension of at least six games, upon his activation from the injured list.
On Sunday night's NBA All-Star game telecast, TNT's Craig Sager reported that
Webber's suspension would be for at least eight games.
Webber has missed 50 games this season while recovering from knee surgery.
Talk of the suspension length seemed to surprise Joe Maloof, co-owner of
the Kings.
"I talked to Geoff [Petrie, president of basketball operations] early this
week about ... when 'Webb' would be activated," Maloof told the Bee.
"He said that was pretty much after the All-Star break. I haven't heard
anything about the length of the suspension, and certainly of it being
more than five games."
The league said previously that it would not discuss its process for
determining the suspension until it is announced. The league also has
expressed to the Kings that Webber should be healthy enough to play
when he is activated, so Webber is not sitting out games he would not
physically be able to play.
In a plea bargain made last July, Webber pleaded guilty charges of lying
to a grand jury about his receiving cash and benefits from a University
of Michigan booster when he played for the Wolverines.
