[南华早报] 2008-6-14 Fong on song for Mando-pop award Hong Kong-based singer-songwriter Khalil Fong has one up on Mando-pop king Jay Chou Jie-lun: unlike Chou, he has won one of the five places to run for this year's best male Mandarin singer in Taiwan's prestigious Golden Melody Awards. "I wouldn't call it 'beating' Jay Chou. I would say I am just temporarily borrowing the place from him," said the soul singer. "I think it is probably because he is very busy doing movies and when you are doing other things, it is hard to focus on your music. I still expect great music from Jay," he said. The Golden Melody Awards are the Grammies of the Chinese pop music industry and it is very rare for a fresh singer like Fong (right) - only four months in the Taiwanese market - to win a nomination. Born in Hawaii and having lived in Guangzhou and Hong Kong, Fong can speak English, Cantonese and Mandarin. He said the language barrier was one of the biggest obstacles preventing local artists from establishing themselves in the Taiwanese market. "For any Mandarin market, you have to have a certain level of Mandarin. The truth is if you do speak the language well, you will have more respect in their industry."
