She talks to Dan Koh about trying something new. By Dan Koh | published Jul 16, 2010 I had a pretty wild childhood. I grew up on Trengganu Street in Chinatown. A fishmonger had set up shop in front of us—it was fantastic, watching people skin snakes and clobber catfish; I also learnt a lot of swear words. The yin is definitely stronger than the yang in my family. I grew up with three sisters, and the women ran the house; even the female cats we had were more dominant. I really hated growing up in Singapore. As a kid, one of my ambitions was to migrate. I already knew I wanted to be in the creative industry, but there were no outlets here at all. After I moved away I changed my mind; while all these other places were teeming with opportunity, they also had a lot of bad shit happening. “Home” changed my life. The song was a pivotal point in my career. People stopped saying, “Oh look, it’s that Hong Kong/Taiwanese singer.” For me, being home is—and it sounds like a bloody cliché—still the most important thing. A friend told me about how the song moved her Malaysian friend to tears. Her friend had been a Singapore PR for the longest time but, when she heard the song, she decided then and there to take up citizenship. As much as we say we’re a global city, Singapore still looks provincial because we’re so small. We’re like a little town, but a very wealthy and well-built one. Working in the real world was really fun. I joined [PR firm] Hill & Knowlton as a campaign specialist, and my favorite account was with the Ministry of Defence: I oversaw the Total Defence campaign in 2009 titled “What Will You Defend?” During my hiatus, I returned to LaSalle as a mature student. I submitted the entire library of my work, and wrote a thesis on the psychology of performance. I got first-class honors. I’m like a life force-sucking machine. I suck the life out of experiences. I don’t expect or want anything to really last. A lot of people warned me about the corporate world. “It’s bitchy, be careful,” they said. Nonetheless, I tried not to have any preconceived notions and realised that, with every personal complaint, you’re part of the contributing factor. The world is uncomfortable with people who have capabilities but no ambitions. They don’t know what you are. I love wearing pants because it makes me feel strong, confident and comfortable, yet elegant like a female debonair. One Cantonese saying goes, “Face is given by other people, but worth is something you lose yourself.” If you hold on to your intrinsic value and you keep cultivating and embracing it, then nothing can ever break you. I choose life over career. In the past I was rather driven, like a worker in a factory line. Now I want to be more sane. --
