#1 No Country for Old Men
The good guy (Josh Brolin) steals $2 million in drug money. The bad guy
(Javier Bardem) tries to get it back, in Joel and Ethan Coen's dry, funny,
beautifully acted, thrillingly cinematic version of the Cormac McCarthy
novel. After two decades of being brilliant on the movie margins, the Coens
are ready for their close-up, and maybe their Oscar.
#2 The Lives of Others
An East German spy (the great Ulrich Mühe) gets a dose of conscience in
Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's poignant, unsettling thriller.
#3 Killer of Sheep
Completed in 1977 but fully released only this year, Charles Burnett's
haunting document of a slaughterhouse worker and his family is surely the
finest film about the black experience.
#4 Atonement
Joe Wright directs Keira Knightley in the Ian McEwan tale of jealousy in
youth, penance in old age. It's first beguiling, then devastating.
#5 Sweeney Todd
Tim Burton finds a mournful heart in the musical about a vengeful barber,
incarnated with a dark, postmortem passion by Johnny Depp.
#6 Persepolis
Marjane Satrapi has transformed her graphic-novel memoir of growing up in
Iran into a harrowing yet exuberant animated feature.
#7 No End in Sight
In a strong year for political docs (Sicko, Terror's Advocate), Charles
Ferguson's study of the Iraq morass stands out for its comprehensive take on
how the U.S. got there and why we can't get out.
#8 In the Valley of Elah
Tommy Lee Jones' dogged, drained humanity anchors Paul Haggis' drama about
the war brought home--a potent requiem for our best intentions.
#9 Waitress
Keri Russell is the piemaker of genius in Adrienne Shelly's spiky, utterly
lovable comedy.
#10 Beowulf
With Robert Zemeckis' vivid, sexy version of the old saga, motion-capture
animation comes of age. See it in the IMAX format; it's 3-Delirious.
