Just as they had in the second quarter, the Rockets carelessly gave away the bulk of that lead with turnovers and a pair of missed free throws. As with the end of the second quarter, Toney Douglas shined up that mess. After hitting a buzzer-beater from 50 feet to end the first half, Douglas ended the third quarter with a jumper to send the Rockets to the fourth quarter with a six-point lead. The Wizards arrived with the league’s worst record and for much of the first half, did not look as good as their 3-15 record. The Rockets, however, built a 14-point lead, then enjoyed a long second-quarter nap. In some ways, the Rockets were not playing very well to begin with. They didn ’t have to, with the Wizards as usual missing every variety of open shot and Harden scoring so easily, that he alone kept pace. In his 9 ½ first-quarter minutes, Harden made 6 of 7 shots to score 17 points. The Wizards made 8 of 22 shots for their 17 points. In the second quarter, however, Harden sat and the Rockets offense went with him. Even when he returned, he could not finish the drives he made so easily in the first quarter, missing his three shots of the quarter. The Rockets’ greater problem, however, was that they spent the quarter carelessly turning the ball over. They had nine turnovers in the quarter while making just 6 of 18 shots. The Wizards did not do much – they made just 37.5 percent of their shots – but they came back to tie the game by default. The Rockets only escaped the first half with a lead when Douglas nailing his running 3-point heave at the buzzer.
