Pump up the Jam
Taiwanese singer Jam Hsiao lives up to his
reputation as the shy boy with a big voice
Taiwanese singer Jam Hsiao is known for belting out power ballads onstage
and for being a man of few words offstage.
In town on Sunday to perform, the extremely soft-spoken 20-year-old lived
up to his reputation.
During a press conference at the lounge of the Sheraton Towers hotel,
he gave monosyllabic answers, smiled shyly when pressed for elaboration
and sometimes did not give any.
Reporters had to lean in to catch his replies. And his manager had to fill
in where his voice trailed off or clarify his succinct replies.
Hsiao was in Singapore to perform at the S-Pop Hurray finale concert on
Sunday. It is a programme on Channel U that uncovers local music talent
and songwriters.
Dressed in a white jacket and a blue stripped shirt, the slight singer --
he weighs 53kg -- looked like a squeaky-clean schoolboy.
When asked if he minded being labelled as "sheng hua yi ge" (Mandarin for
Reticent Big Brother), he said matter-of-factly: "No."
And then, as an afterthought, he added: "You are free to write anything
you wish."
The youngest of four children of a retired father, who used to be self-
employed, and civil servant mother, Hsiao started singing in a Taipei pub
at the age of 17.
He has no formal vocal training except for the fact that "my family loves
to sing".
He shot to fame last year after being talent-spotted to appear on a popular
singing contest called One Million Star. He was a "wild card" brought in
to eliminate contestants, and he trounced Aska Yang, a popular contestant
on the show, by singing a ballad called Betray.
Since then, the shy boy with the big voice has been appearing on various
talk shows, and was even invited by Taiwanese singer A*mei to sing a duet
with her on her latest album, A Moment.
He also performed at the Golden Horse Awards ceremony last December,
singing the four songs nominated for Best Original Song. He is releasing
his debut album in May.
When Hsiao touched down in Singapore, the unlikely heart-throb was greeted
by more than 100 fans at Changi airport, who followed him in cars.
On his impression of A*mei, he said: "She's great."
Was he nervous before his performance at the Golden Horse ceremony?
"Yes. I couldn't sleep."
Has life changed since he became famous? "Yes."
How is the new album coming along? "Very Well."
Is he seeing anyone? "No."
The ice king routine continued when the subject of his birthday came up.
He turns 21 next Sunday, and said matter-of-factly that he did not think
birthdays were a big deal.
Any birthday wishes? He answered with a smile: "It's a secret."
