'You have to admire Japan's enthusiasm'

Analysis by Andy Roxburgh
This was one of those games when before the goal goes in, you would not like
to bet on the outcome. It was very warm down on the pitch, particularly early
on, and both teams tried to play counterattacking football.
Japan got through a lot with that tactic and so did Greece. But while Greece
tried to play in diagonal balls from wide areas, Japan attempted to make
progress with central combinations and by linking their passes together.
The problem that Japan often face is that they do everything at such a pace
they find it difficult to find the composure to finish off their moves. They
don't try to change their tempo at all. With Brazil you will find them slowing
down near goal to make sure they are composed – Ronaldo will decelerate just
before getting his shot away – but Japan don't do that. Even so you can only
admire the enthusiasm they bring to the game.
Greece badly missed their captain Theo Zagorakis who was their inspiration
during the European Championship. He is their playmaker but he is not only
that. He is their main inspiration as well and his absence definitely had
an effect on the Greece team. They are not a one-man band by any means but
your key players are always vital to the group and he is also important to
them with his free-kick delivery from wide areas.
In Portugal last summer Greece found a lot of joy with their diagonal balls
to the far post or their aerial strength from corners and you have to say
that Japan defended heroically when they needed to. Greece never gave up and
were always very committed but it proved not to be their day.
When Japan got their goal it gave them a new lease of life and they tried
to go for more. They deserved it in as much that when called upon Shunsuke
Nakamura produced the one telling moment to lay on the only goal.
