Feyenoord refuse to release Ono Mar 18, 2005 FootballAsia.com TOKYO – Japan international midfielder Shinji Ono has found himself the subject of a club versus country row after his Dutch side Feyenoord refused to release him for upcoming 2006 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers against Iran and Bahrain. Ono, who only recently returned to action after being sidelined for nearly three months with an ankle injury, was named by Japan coach Zico on Monday in the squad that will take on Iran in Tehran on March 25 before tackling Bahrain in Saitama on March 30. However the Japan Times reported Thursday that Feyenoord have sent a document to the Japan Football Association stating that they are not willing to release Ono for either match as he is "still in a recovery period after undergoing surgery on his ankle" at the end of 2004. The JFA have responded by pointing out that Ono started and scored the opening goal in Feyenoord’s 4-1 win against Roda JC on Sunday and will demand that he should be released four days before the Iran game, in line with FIFA regulations. Ono himself has declined to comment on the matter. "Hopefully my club and the JFA will be able to sort things out," he said. Meanwhile, Zico has added concerns that defender Yuji Nakazawa could miss out on the match against Iran after picking up a knock while helping his club, Yokohama F Marinos to a 2-0 win over PSM Makassar in Indonesia on Wednesday. There was swelling in Nakazawa’s right knee after the match and the 2004 J.League MVP was to have the injury examined after returning from Makassar.
