Sun Jun 23 21:55:13 2002
Look out Germany!!!!!
Turkey vs.S.Korea
Number One: Yes, it's obvious that the linesman was wrong on calling that
goal out of bounds. It was still clearly in bounds, everyone knows that.
It was an incredibly bad call, just horrible, and the linesman was blind.
Was it a stolen goal? No, it wasn't a goal in the first place. Make any
accusations you want, but if you want to talk then let's talk about the
actual RULES of the game. The linesman was blind, but he wasn't slow. When
the flag goes up and the whistle blares, the ball is out of play,
immediately, and not a second later. Whether the call is correct or
overwhelmingly incorrect, the play ends when the flag goes up, regardless of
the circumstances. If the flag went up AFTER the ball hit net, that would
be one thing, but the flag went up right has Joaquin's right foot hit off
the cross, but WAY before Morrientes headed it in, before his feet even left
the ground. Play then ended, right then and there. Hey, these are Fifa
rules not mine.
And if you want to bemoan that Spain would have scored had the ball been
kept in play and the flag never went up, can you say with conviction that
none of the Korean defenders or the keeper saw the flag (the linesman was
behind and about a yard to the right of Joaquin) despite it being completely
in the line of vision towards the ball, then I don't think you can assume
the Korean defenders failed to drop their guard. If you were a Korea
defender on that play and saw the flag go up, wouldn't you say "oh, I guess
play is dead." And likewise, Morrientes (the one who headed the Joaquin
cross in) would definitely have seen that flag, unless he can magically
predict when cross's come into the box without actually looking at the ball,
where it's coming from, or who's making the pass. But hey, maybe he does
have this magical ability: He never saw the flag go up, he never realized
play was dead, he never decided "Hey, play just ended but I'll try and see
if I can head this in and get away with it." If this is at all true, then
with this magical ability Morrientes is obviously the GREATEST PLAYER EVER
IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF ALL SPORTS IN ALL CIVILIATIONS IN ALL HUMANKIND
HISTORY. Or maybe Morrientes did see the flag while he was watching for the
cross and it just didn't register in his brain, which would mean that he was
unable to react to a split second change in the situation. I'd give
Morrientes a bit more credit...any player unable to register new information
in a split second is not going be as critical to Spain's victories (in my
opinion) as Morrientes has.
And what about the two other "goals" that were "disallowed"? On one, Spain
was offsides. The flag, again, went up before ball hit net. And on the
other, it was "disallowed" for fouling in the box. Also clear. Come on,
even Luis Enrique added it up this way, I quote: "We had clear chances but
they ruled out one good goal and we just missed scoring on other occasions."
(
http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/en/020623/1/17m1.html) Oh, I'm sorry, I'm
quoting this from an article on the Korean-conspiracy involved Fifa
website. They're making this quote up, I'm sure. ONLY "one good goal?"
Enrique is probably too distraught to have realized he's having words put
into his mouth that he didn't say. I'm sure someone on this list will email
him and let him know. 3 good goals, not one, right?
Number Two: Korea have never won a single match legally? I beg to differ.
The Italy and Spain games were controversial, I wouldn't disagree on that
(and I've already said my piece on Totti's ejection, thank you). But Korea
beat Poland fair and square, without controversial calls. I don't remember
anyone, Polish, Korean, or otherwise, complaining about the fairness of that
outcome. And the same goes for the Portugal game, Jaio Pinto deserved the
red card and in fact Portugal was lucky not to have 2 more players ejected
outright for physically assaulting the referee. And I don't remember any
Americans complaining that they drew with Korea, thank you.
I feel really sorry for Spain, because yes that linesman was blind and the
quality of referees at this world cup is substandard and poor. They were
clearly the better team with far more chances and dominated the play. But
then again, the U.S. were also clearly the better team in their game against
Germany, dominating the play and creating far more chances. It was an
incredibly disappointing performance from what had been so far an amazing
and unstoppable team this year, and I hope they get back into shape and do
their best against Korea. But in football, the better team does not always
win. The team that puts ball to net wins. That's how it goes.
