The Top 25 Cleveland Indians in 2017 countdown had to reach Carlos Santana eventually. Santana comes in at No. 5 on the list, reminding fans just how valuable he was. He finished the year slashing .259/.363/.455 and slugged 23 home runs. Santana never put up legendary numbers. Instead, he provided consistency at any spot in the lineup and several in the field. We have covered multiple angles of his departure this offseason, and all fans can hope now is that Yonder Alonso comes in and provides similar production to what Santana did in Cleveland for seven full seasons. There is the valid fear that Alonso’s 2017 numbers were an anomaly. But there’s no point in worrying about that now. This is the time of year to be optimistic. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Seeing Santana in a Philadelphia Phillies jersey is going to be extremely weird. Almost as weird as Jim Thome in one. Not to bring up any old wounds about the newest Hall of Famer or anything, although if you want a team to steal your darlings, look to the Phillies. The loss of Santana stands out because the Indians saw more subtractions than additions the past few months. A deep organization can do that, but it does cause some fans to worry, which is completely fair. The problem some fans miss is that ownership is already increasing payroll every season in pursuit of a World Series championship, making Santana’s $20 million annual salary way out of the price range. I’d also hesitate to say he is worth that much in this year’s market. Good thing he signed early. Fans shouldn’t be angry at Santana and from what I have seen and heard, it seems like more of the anger is directed at ownership. I don’t agree with that, but it’s better than hating a player who is seeking a larger, guaranteed deal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ So now it’s up to Alonso to fill the void and take on the everyday role at first base. Carlos Carrasco would be the ace of the staff in many other cities. Luckily for Cleveland Indians fans, the team has two aces in Carrasco and Corey Kluber. Carrasco is fresh off the best season of his career where he finished with a record of 18-6, a 3.29 ERA and a fourth-place finish in the American League Cy Young Award voting. He pitched in exactly 200 innings, which was the first time he had gone for more than 183.2 innings in a single season. That previous career-high came back in 2015 when he finished 14th in Cy Young voting. The sky is the limit for the right-hander in 2018. Kluber remains the face of the rotation, but Carrasco gives the Indians another legitimate star on the mound. Too bad he only started one game in the 2017 ALDS. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ His 226 strikeouts were second on the team behind Kluber and helped contribute to the entire staff’s collective 10.08 K/9 in 2017. Carrasco’s personal mark was 10.17. The Indians have Carrasco on an extremely team-friendly deal paying him only $8 million this season. The one thing worth noting is that the team holds a $9 million option for him in 2019, but not picking that up would be insanity. The only way that would happen would be if the team wins the World Series this year and the Dolans decide to slash payroll in 2019. But one step at a time. My personal prediction for Carrasco is that he will make his first All-Star Game in 2018, while also finishing in the top five of the Cy Young voting for the second straight year. This may have been considered a bold prediction a year ago, but it is more than fair now. With all the question marks surrounding the team this season, Carrasco helps provide consistency to one of the best starting rotations in all of baseball. The Cleveland Indians don’t just have one face of the franchise. Nor do they have two. There are three players in town who stand out above the rest not only in the clubhouse, but in all of baseball. Those three are Francisco Lindor, Jose Ramirez, and Corey Kluber. We began the year with a countdown of the top 25 players from the 2017 season and made it up to Carlos Santana at No. 4. Then, honestly for no other reason than life getting in the way, the list stopped. This post serves as the final three, with Lindor, Ramirez, and Kluber all coming in at the top spot. At the same time, all three serve as the top three players on the team heading into the 2018 season. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ It is amazing that we look at two kids in their early 20s and place a world of expectations upon them, but that only happens because they are just so damn good at the game of baseball. The two make the amazing look effortless and form one of the more iconic infield duos in franchise history. Then there is Kluber, who will go down as one of the best pitchers to ever wear an Indians uniform. Fans simply expect him to go out every five days and dominate, and that is the case most of the time. At a time when there are so many competitions all throughout the roster, these three players can be looked to as constants the same way we looked at Yan Gomes, Michael Brantley and Jason Kipnis a few years ago. One doesn’t even need to go into the stats, as these three players will be looked to for consistency all season long, and hopefully in the postseason. While all three had their struggles in last year’s ALDS, the entire team lost it during those final three games. I’m not sure how much different things would have gone if only Lindor, Ramirez, and Kluber played better. It was a team effort and a team loss. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Baseball is a unique sport where players are under team control for quite some time, meaning this trio will be doing great things for at least a few more seasons. Kluber is under team control through 2021, Ramirez through 2023, and Lindor through 2021. The shortstop’s status is one fans will keep a close eye on, but even if a long-term deal can’t be worked out, it’s not like he is leaving tomorrow. Indians fans still have several more years of Lindor before any thoughts of doom can settle in. And maybe he will even have an extension before long. It is rare to have so many stars on one team, but Indians fans will tell you that this is nothing new after witnessing the great teams of the 90s.
