Jay Bruce made his Cleveland Indians debut on August 10 of last year, and went hitless in one at-bat. He followed that up with an 11-game hitting streak. Bruce’s slash line of .248/.341/.477 with the Indians doesn’t stand out as all that great, but he still provided fans with plenty of memorable moments. His first came when he hit a walk-off double to extend the historic streak to 22 games, while his other top moments came in the postseason during the team’ s two wins. Bruce had home runs in both games before things went south for the entire team. Bruce is now back with the New York Mets and while some Indians fans are angry about this, a few big moments don’t warrant a big new deal, especially when players like Lonnie Chisenhall and Brandon Guyer may provide equal value in right field this season. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ But just because Bruce is gone doesn’t mean fans should be angry. If anything, his acquisition shows fans the plan in place by this front office. Instead of shelling out big money in the offseason based on past performance, the Indians may decide to just go after players who are doing well in that given season. If there are injuries or players underperforming this season, don’t be surprised if the Indians are buyers both before and after the July trade deadline. Bruce fit in with the team right away and the team should continue to search for such respected veteran talent in the future, especially when trying to fit a new players into a lineup during a pennant race. A few highlights didn’t earn Bruce a new contract in Cleveland, but they will go in the highlight reel for the season after some time passes and fans aren’t still angry about the ALDS exit. There are some Cleveland Indians fans who remain upset that the team picked up Michael Brantley‘s option for the 2018 season. I personally don’t believe doing this meant no money was available to retain Carlos Santana or Jay Bruce, but the anger also comes from the fact Brantley hasn’t played an entire season since 2015. Brantley was actually an All-Star in 2017, which some fans may forget when remembering his season. He appeared in 90 regular season games and three postseason games. The outfielder dealt with some small ailments early in the year, but things turned disastrous on August 8 against the Colorado Rockies when Brantley went to the ground out in left field. The ankle injury kept him out until the last series of the regular season. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ But in a somewhat good way, the injury may have pushed the front office to get Jay Bruce. It’s interesting how things work out like that sometimes. Brantley leaves a particularly bad tastes in the mouths of some fans because of how he performed in the 2017 ALDS after missing the 2016 postseason entirely. He went 1-11 against the Yankees, but to be fair he should have not even been on the postseason roster. Terry Francona is loyal to his veteran players, but Brantley wasn’t ready to help the team after just returning from the disabled list. The most frustrating thing about Brantley is that it’s not like he has been injured every season of his career. He played in at least 114 games in every season from 2011-2015, with 2016 being the first year he dealt with a major injury that caused him to miss nearly the whole season. The veteran is also a two-time All-Star and won a Silver Slugger Award in 2014. And before he got injured, Brantley was having a solid 2017 season. He slashed .299/.357/.444, all three of those marks being above his career averages. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Picking up his 2018 option shows that the front office is confident in Brantley returning at full health, but it is an expensive $12 million gamble. However, it will be a bargain if he stays healthy. With a career slash line of .292/.349/.423, the Indians are getting an above-average player in left field who could easily be an All-Star once again. Tyler Olson was one of the pleasant surprises of the 2017 Cleveland Indians season.Olson didn’t appear with the Indians until July 21, but he finished the season with an ERA of 0.00 in 20 innings of work. Not too bad.The young left-hander also made three postseason appearances, not allowing a run in two innings of work. Olson stepped in and filled the role that was supposed to be occupied by Boone Logan after the latter had his season end due to an injury. But even though that is why Olson got his chance, he was the better option overall. Whether that will continue in 2018 remains to be seen, but there is no reason to expect any major regression from Olson. He is going to give up some earned runs this year now that he will open the season with the Indians, but for now it is hard to imagine last year being a one-hit wonder. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The 2017 season was the third season that Olson made a big league appearance. He pitched in 11 games for the Seattle Mariners in 2015 and in one game for the New York Yankees in 2016.He did allow eight earned runs in 13.1 innings back in 2015, but it was his first time in the majors. Chalking it up to being so inexperienced is fair.With both Andrew Miller and Cody Allen potentially leaving after the 2018 season, Olson may be one of the key pieces of the bullpen moving forward. Miller and Allen aren’t guaranteed to leave, but I don’t see how the team affords to keep one of them, let alone both. However, the market is changing this offseason, so anything is possible. Back to the game on the field, Olson may slot in as the third option in the bullpen this season if Terry Francona wants to use the left-hander as Andrew Miller Jr. Putting Olson in high-leverage situations in the regular season would prepare him for the postseason, give Miller rest, and also prepare Olson to take that next step to becoming the go-to guy in 2019. This is putting a lot of pressure on a pitcher who had one good half-season, but his numbers were no fluke. There are probably a lot of Cleveland Indians fans out there who wish they could be as cool as Mike Clevinger. Clevinger presents a fun and carefree self on social media, but more importantly he serves as a key pitcher on the staff, whether that be in the bullpen or the starting rotation. The right-hander made 27 appearances in 2017, with 21 of those being starts. He is still battling for a spot in the 2018 rotation, but made it clear he wants to be a starter once again. Clevinger had the best season of his young career last year, logging 121.2 innings with a 3.11 ERA. He struck out 137 batters and only walked 60. He did transition to the bullpen at the end of the season, but it was not because of poor performance. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The competition for the final two spots in the rotation is interesting because it seems like including Clevinger is a no-brainer. However, Terry Francona is loyal to his veteran players and may want to give a player like Josh Tomlin a shot over Clevinger, even when it isn’t the best choice on paper. There is also the fact Tomlin had his option picked up and Danny Salazar is a top pitcher in the league when healthy, adding intrigue to the competition. Even with all of this, Clevinger should be in the starting rotation. But if the team decides to have him start the year in the bullpen, he will be the first choice to return to the rotation if anyone struggles or gets hurt. There is still a bit of the unknown with Clevinger, who only has one full year of starting experience. And that “full” year only included 121.2 innings. But when comparing him to Salazar and Tomlin, Clevinger is at least the second-best among the group, behind a healthy Salazar. There is still the possibility the team swings a trade during this slow offseason, so perhaps a player like Tomlin could be moved, although I’d doubt that would happen given his experience with this team. Austin Jackson only played in 85 games for the Cleveland Indians in 2017, but he did enough in that span to impress Indians fans. To be fair, he may have also impressed the world with one of the greatest catches ever made. Jackson was brought in last spring on an invite and made the most of his time with the team. He slashed .318/.387/.482, all above his career averages, and had 29 extra-base hits in 280 at-bats. The depth he provided was priceless and it seemed like he did more than enough to warrant a new deal in 2018, but Jackson remains a free agent in what has been one of the slowest offseasons in recent history. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The fact he remains unsigned doesn’t really hurt or help his chances of returning. It just means he is waiting for the best offer, which is fine considering teams don’t report to Spring Training for a few weeks. And by now, Jackson has to have a few offers on the table for him. Some see Melvin Upton Jr’s spring invite as a potential way to replace Jackson for cheap, but it just seems like the front office is doing its due diligence once again in searching for anyone who can help the team. It worked with Jackson last year and if it works with Upton, it doesn’t automatically mean he is Jackson’s direct replacement. Having a veteran on the team, and one who has had a nice career like Jackson, would be valuable for several reasons. Along with the leadership Jackson can provide, it is no secret that this Indians team has dealt with injury problems throughout the past few years. Michael Brantley remains a giant question mark, while Lonnie Chisenhall hasn’ t been the healthiest of players as of late. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Add in Bradley Zimmer’s hard style of play and Brandon Guyer’s wrist issues, and love of getting beaned, and this team needs options in the outfield. Spotrac lists Austin Jackson’s value at just over $13 million per year, so that is obviously out of the team’s price range. However, this value isn’t taking into account the way the market is falling. Jackson may not want to accept a deal that pays $4-5 million annually, but it may be all he gets this year. And with this year’s market, that estimate may even be too high. I doubt Jackson remains unsigned once Spring Training begins, and I do think he has a great shot to return.
