The last time that Jason Kipnis played in fewer than 100 games was in his rookie season when he appeared just 36 times for a below average Cleveland Indians squad. 2017 saw a less than optimal Jason Kipnis as he struggled to get healthy and stay healthy. Overall, Kip played in just 90 games (373 PA) after putting up solid seasons back to back in 2015 and 2016. Kip bucked the “only good every other year” narrative in 2016 by slashing .275/.343/.469 (116 wRC+) to follow up his All-Star caliber 2015 (.303/.372/.451, 124 wRC+). Kipnis struggled with a shoulder injury throughout all of spring training, and despite his best efforts, Jason was sidelined by Tito midway through the spring campaign. The Tribe skipper informed everyone that Kipnis would not be ready for the season opener as he was still dealing with a strained right rotator cuff (I’m told that these injuries can range from a general pain in the shoulder to excruciating levels that make it impossible to raise your arm). Because of this injury, Kipnis wouldn’t make his 2017 debut until April 21 against the Chicago White Sox. Having missed a fair amount of spring training, he was basically still in “spring training mode” almost a month+ into the regular season, and it showed. Kip turned in one of his worst months of his career in April, slashing .161/.212/.161 for the entire month (granted, it was a SSS of 33 plate appearances). Not a great groove, but markedly better than the first month of the season. He had raised his average 74 points, the extra base hits were starting to make an appearance (14 doubles and 8 home runs), and his OBP was starting to creep up to around his career norm (.333 in June vs. a .340 career average). He wasn’t anywhere near the level we saw him at in the previous two seasons, but he was no longer an automatic out at the plate. With a lineup of Francisco Lindor, Jose Ramirez, Edwin Encarnacion, Carlos Santana, and the (then) healthy Michael Brantley, a healthy Jason Kipnis was poised to turn a solid lineup into a deadly one. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 或许直到六月，Kip才真正进入状态，不是指巅峰状态，但可以看出与之前的表现相比明 显有改善，他将他生涯的平均RBI提升到74(/162场)，同时也开始出现长打(有14支二垒安 打与8支全垒打)，OBP也缓慢提升至他的生涯水准(六月平均是0.333，生涯平均是0.340) 。 虽然目前所有的数据都还达不到他过去两季的表现，但至少当前他的表现已经不是自杀棒 了。笑脸人的打线已经有Lindor、Ramirez、EE、Santana和当时还健康的Brantley，如果 Kip能够保持健康的话，就能将这个完整的打线提升成致命的打线。 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ And then the hamstring started hurting. On July 8 against the Detroit Tigers, Kipnis grounded a ball back up the middle to Justin Verlander. In an attempt to beat out the throw, Kip hustled down the first base line and slowed up as he reached first base, visibly favoring his right leg as he hopped the final few feet of the way. The next day, Kipnis was placed on the 10-day DL with a hamstring injury. Luckily for Kip, the All-Star Break was that week, so he’d have a little bit of time to relax and recover anyway. The injury, however, was worse than it may have initially appeared because Kipnis would not return to the lineup for the Tribe until August 6 against the New York Yankees. Now with two DL stints under his belt for the season, Kipnis had to start over yet again, this time with just two months left to play before the postseason. It only took four days, however, for Kipnis to be pulled mid-game with a tight right hamstring as he only made it into the fourth inning on August 10 against the Tampa Bay Rays before exiting early. This injury wasn’t enough to send Kip back to the DL as he was able to return to the lineup on August 13. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 祸不单行的腿伤 在七月八号与老虎队的比赛中，Kip从Verlander手中击出一球中间方向的滚地球後，为争 取上垒机会而用尽全力朝一垒冲刺，但当他抵达一垒垒包後，他的速度立刻慢下来，可以 看出他为了保护他的右腿而仅用单脚慢慢地跳回垒包。隔天，Kip就因为右侧大腿拉伤而 进入了伤兵名单。幸运的是，当周刚好是MLB的明星赛周，这让他有了一些时间可以让大 腿的伤势恢复。但这个伤势却比大家一开始想像的还要严重，Kip直到八月六号对上洋基 的比赛才重新回到笑脸人的打线名单。历经两趟DL之旅的Kip，眼看距离季後赛只剩差不 多两个月的时间，但刚伤癒的他还需要一些时间找回身手，偏偏此时他又在比赛中感到右 腿的旧伤复发，在八月十日对上光芒的比赛中仅出赛四局就退场。幸好这次并不严重，还 不需要将Kip放入伤兵名单中，他也在八月十三号就回到了先发名单中。 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10 days after his return, he was back on the DL again with another strained right hamstring. With all of the injuries that the Indians suffered in 2017, it’s amazing that anyone trusts the medical staff at this point. Many folks claimed that Kipnis returned too early after his July 8 injury. Whether or not that was the case is impossible to know at this point, but it was frustrating to see Kipnis continually fight to get back to the field only to go down again. Thankfully, his August 23 DL trip was his last of the season. He returned on September 17 for good this time, but not in the capacity you most likely expected. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 只是这次伤癒复出後十天，他又再度回到了伤兵名单中，这次，是右大腿另一处的拉伤。 在见识了2017年笑脸人球员的伤史，我不相信在这个时刻还有人会信任他们的医疗团队。 许多乡民都认为Kip在七月八号受伤後不应该这麽快就离开伤兵名单，应该让伤势完全复 原再继续比赛。不论这次的伤与上次的是否有关连，但看到kip不断地在DL名单中来回挣 扎还是令人感到沮丧。幸好，在九月十七号，他终於结束了本季的伤兵名单之旅，同时也 回到球场，然而，却不是回到那个你我所期待看到的熟悉位置。 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The center field experiment If you don’t know, Jason Kipnis was drafted in 2009 by the Cleveland Indians in the second round as a center fielder out of ASU. He played CF in low-A for the Tribe but then quickly transitioned to 2B where he’s been ever since. In his return to the Tribe lineup in mid-September, Kipnis assumed his college position for the first time at the major league level. With a 14.5 lead in the AL Central, Tito thought it was a good time to experiment with Jason Kipnis. A healthy Kipnis is essential for the Cleveland Indians in their lineup, but with the emergence of Jose Ramirez as an offensive powerhouse in addition to be a better defender than Kip at 2B, Kipnis was suddenly without a position. Unfortunately, necessity presented itself when Bradley Zimmer broke his hand in a headfirst slide a week prior. With no center fielder (sans Austin Jackson) and no room at 2B, it was the perfect opportunity to find a new spot on the diamond for Jason Kipnis. And things did look promising for a while. Kip had his best slash line of the season in the final month (.273/.342/.455, 109 wRC+), and aside from playing way too deep on almost every play, Kip looked like he could be feasible in center field. And of course, he made the catch of his life in Game 1 of the ALDS. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 中外野的实验 你或许不知道，Kip在2009年被笑脸人选进球队的时候，就是以亚利桑那大学当家中外野 手的身分入选。刚进入笑脸人低阶一A时，他在场上的位置就是中外野，只是没多久旋即 被移至内野防区，负责今日你我熟悉的二垒位置。 这次九月中回归球队後，Kip被安排镇守中外野─这个他大学时期再熟悉不过的位置，却 是他首次从这个角度欣赏大联盟的球场。因为当时在美联中区已经领先14.5场的胜差，嚼 嚼认为这是个不错的时机可以对Kip做出这个实验。健康的Kip绝对是笑脸人打线中不可或 缺的球员，偏偏在他缺席球队的这段日子，Ramirez不仅在防守二垒的表现超过Kip，同时 在进攻端的火力输出也毫不逊色，这让Kip在瞬间就失去了他的守备位置。就在Kip回归球 场的前几天，Bradley Zimmer不幸地因为一次头部滑垒使得手骨骨折，在球队缺少先发中 外野手以及无法腾出二垒位置的情况下，让Kip回到中外野这个选项就很自然地出现了。 在Kip短暂代班中外野的期间，他缴出了本季最佳的打击成绩，在球季最後一个月他的打 击三围是.273/.342/.455，wRC+为109。在防守方面，除了一些太高难度的球，Kip看起来 在中外野的表现还算称职，而且他还在美联分区第一场上演了他生涯至今最佳的中外野防 守美技。 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Disappearing offense Like many of his teammates, Kip’s offense disappeared almost entirely in the postseason. He went just 4-for-22 with a lone XBH (a triple in game 3...why couldn’t we get him home with less than 2 outs?) and didn’t walk at all while striking out 8 times. I don’t necessarily blame Kipnis for his sub-optimal play in October; he barely had a chance to find his swing in the regular season, so expecting him to turn it on immediately in October was probably a bit much. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 消失的棒子 跟他许多队友一样，Kip在季後赛的棒子突然的消失，在22打数中他只击出4支安打，其中 只有一支长打(在分区系列赛第三场所击出的三垒安打，而且还不是出现在两出局後，但 最终他还是无法得分)，吞下八次三振却没有获得任何一次保送。我并不是真的要责怪Kip 在季後赛不甚理想的表现，毕竟他在季赛时并没有太多机会让他找到打击感觉，在这种情 况下，期待他能在十月份大爆发是有点强人所难。 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ What will 2018 bring for Jason Kipnis? Ever since I started religiously following the Tribe in 2012, Jason Kipnis has been my favorite player. I remember vividly the shot of him despondent as the Rays beat the Indians in the 2013 Wild Card game. My wallpaper for the longest time was the picture of him and Tito at the press conference where Kip signed his six-year contract in 2014 where he was adamant that he wanted to be part of the group that brought a championship to Cleveland. I got a little teary eyed when I saw Tito bear-hug Kipnis last season when the Tribe clinched their first World Series berth since 1997. For those reasons and many others, this season was rough to watch as Kipnis continually battled to regain his health and find consistency on the field. With a healthy Bradley Zimmer next year and the revelation of Jose Ramirez at 2B, there’s this question of where will Jason Kipnis fit on the 2018 team. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Kip的2018展望 我自从2012年成为一个虔诚的笑脸信徒後，Kip就是我最喜欢的球员。2013年外卡战对上 光芒队最终输球时，Kip在场上沮丧的表情至今仍深印在我脑海中。我家墙上贴最久的壁 纸就是2014年Kip与笑脸人签下六年合约後，与嚼嚼在记者会上的合照，当时他信誓旦旦 地说他希望能成为将金盃带回克城的冠军队成员其中之一。当上季笑脸人获得自1997年後 ，再度进军世界大赛的门票时，我看到嚼嚼给了他一个大大的拥抱，这一幕也让我的眼眶 也微微地湿了。 这个赛季看着Kip不断地与自己的伤势奋斗，希望能在场上找到稳定出赛的时间，对我而 言无疑是最难受的一季。明年球季健康的Zimmer、破茧而出的Ramirez都将让Kip在队上的 位置变得尴尬。 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ My hope is that he will be able to retake his spot in the infield and slide Ramirez over to 3B, but Tito has said that he really likes the 2B/SS combo of Ramirez/Lindor, so who knows if he’ll want to disrupt that. Maybe he can play 1B if Carlos Santana doesn’t return? I don’t have the answer. But I do know that going into 2018, Kipnis will be on the wrong side of 30 and will be coming off arguably his worst season of his career both from a statistical and health standpoint. I want to believe that this year was a fluke and we’ ll see the All-Star second baseman return next season to lead the Tribe to a world championship. But there is this nagging fear in the back of my mind that we are watching the deterioration of Jason Kipnis, and it’s painful to watch if that’s the case. If Kip is healthy, he will succeed. His primary goal for 2018 has to be to stay on the field as much as possible in order to find his rhythm and keep it throughout the duration of the season. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 我个人是希望他能够继续在二垒位置出赛，而Ramirez能在三垒继续为球队贡献，但嚼嚼 却已经表明他非常喜欢Ramirez与Lindor在二游的这个组合，不过谁知道会不会有甚麽事 情会改变他的想法。 也许Kip能够移到一垒填补万一Santana无法回到球队的空位，但我不知道最终的答案。 我只知道进入2018球季後，Kip将会迈入不讨喜的30岁，而且他在上季不论是统计数据或 是健康都缴出了生涯最差的成绩单，我依然相信今年的他只是运气不好，而明年球季我们 就能继续看到这位明星二垒手带领笑脸人获得世界大赛冠军。但偏偏我心中的小恶魔却告 诉我说我们现在正目睹Kip的退化，如果真的是这样的话，那真是一件痛苦的事。若Kip能 保持健康，他就能持续在场上有好的表现，所以他在2018年的首要目标就是尽可能的出赛 ，在攻守两端都找回他的节奏，并在整个赛季都维持他应有的水准。 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --
