Lonnie Soloff, the Indians' head athletic trainer, said Monday that right-hander Jason Knapp, one of the key pieces to the deal, will undergo arthroscopic surgery to remove loose bodies from his right shoulder Tuesday in New York. Soloff said Knapp, 19, should be 100 percent by spring training. GM Mark Shapiro, through Bart Swain, director of media relations, said the Indians would not file a grievance with the Commissioner's office, even though the team says Knapp's condition existed before the trade was made. "I don't think the Phillies were disingenuous in any way," said Soloff. "Having said that, it's clear it was a pre-existing condition." Knapp was on the disabled list with biceps tendinitis in his right shoulder when the Indians sent Lee to the Phillies on July 29. Soloff said the Indians found no evidence in the medical reports provided by the Phillies of loose tissue in his shoulder, which the team believes caused the tendinitis. Soloff said the Phillies had never done an MRI on Knapp, so that test wasn't available for the Indians' medical staff to review. Soloff added that they couldn't make the Phillies do an MRI on Knapp. The Indians couldn't do one themselves because the trade hadn't been made. Asked if he thought the Indians' medical staff missed the injury, Soloff said, "I don't think so. In cases of trades, we request all the information that is available. Once again, the information we reviewed and the conversations from doctor to doctor and medical staff to medical staff did not indicate any inclination that surgery was needed for Jason." Knapp was a big part of the trade. The Indians have said they wouldn't have made the trade without him. Some in the organization favored Knapp over Kyle Drabek, a pitcher the Phillies refused to deal for Roy Halladay or Lee. Dr. David Altchek will perform the surgery. He gave Knapp with a second opinion after Dr. Mark Schickendantz, the Indians' head physician, made the original diagnosis and surgical recommendation. The Indians then advised Knapp and his family to seek a second opinion. The Indians acquired right-hander Carlos Carrasco, catcher Lou Marson, infielder Jason Donald and Knapp in the deal. Donald and Knapp are on the disabled list. Carrasco and Marson are in the big leagues, while Lee is 6-2 for the NL East-leading Phillies. He's down: Reliever Joe Smith (left knee) was placed on the disabled list Monday, but the Indians think he could pitch again before the season ends Oct. 4. Smith, whose stay on the disabled list is retroactive to Sept. 1, will start throwing off the mound at Progressive Field later this week. The Indians officially added Grady Sizemore (left wrist, left groin) to the DL Monday. Sizemore is scheduled to undergo surgery on his left lower abdomen Wednesday in Philadelphia. Sizemore underwent surgery on his left elbow last week. Time to talk: The Indians opened their three-game series against the Twins on Monday having lost 10 of their last 13 games. Eric Wedge, down to perhaps his last 20 games as manager, thought it was time for a talk. He held about a 10-minute team meeting with the players and staff before batting practice. "We've got 20 games left," said Wedge. "I want to make sure everyone is clear that everything we do matters. "Every day you get better or worse. There's no in-between." Wedge said that if the Indians had won 10 of their last 13, he would have not called the meeting. "I don't want us to start drifting," said Wedge. "I've seen a few things that I'm not crazy about. Things that we're not all about. We have a lot of young people up here. I want to make sure they understand how we go about things." The Indians have 12 rookies on the roster. Finally: Justin Morneau and Jason Kubel didn't start for the Twins because of injuries. Kubel, who homered as an eighth-inning pinch-hitter, is hitting .417 (20-for-48) with six homers and 15 RBI against the Tribe this season. Morneau has 12 RBI. --
