Sabathia: Yes, you announced on your Web site that you don't plan to talk contract with the Indians until after the season. Yes, you said as much at a press conference Tuesday, hoping that will end all the questions about your looming free agency at the end of the season. But, no, it's not going away. People will want to know if you will sign with the Indians. And if you don't, they ask why you won't talk about it -- press conferences and Web site statements not withstanding. Remember, this is Cleveland, and the fans and media obsess about stars in their free-agent seasons. You have been here since 2001. You've watched teammates Jim Thome, Manny Ramirez and Kevin Millwood all waltz out of town after the final years of their contracts. On Tuesday, you told the fans to "have faith" and that you may still sign with the Tribe after the season. But most fans assume you'll leave. It also is your right. You have been a good player for the Indians, developing into a Cy Young Award winner in front of our eyes. Your teammates love you, your manager and coaches respect you. If you want to go to the National League (where you can bat) or to the West Coast (where you live) or to the Yankees (yuck!), that's now your option. If you want the largest contract ever given a pitcher, more than the 6-year, $121 million the Mets delivered to Johan Santana, you may get it. No doubt, your agents would love that, because it makes them more money in commissions and helps them attract new clients. As you must know, very few agents suggest a player sign for less money to stay in a middle-sized market. If you want to make that call, it will come solely from you and your family. On Tuesday, you said, "Everyone knows how I feel about this place, the organization and the city." Some fans will hear that and counter, "Great, sign that $90 million extension that will keep you here for the next five years." You probably could get the Indians to raise the dollar amount a little higher. You can mention the 3-year, $52 million extension signed by National League Cy Young winner Jake Peavy with San Diego, or the 5-year, $91 million deal Carlos Zambrano secured from the Cubs as guide posts if you want to stay. The Indians don't want make it longer than five years. Given the history of pitchers who signed lengthy, $100 million deals -- Kevin Brown, Mike Hampton and Barry Zito -- that's a sane approach. It's good you didn't make the mistake of some players who say, "I really want to stay, but I need to do what is best for my family." You seem to realize that you've been blessed. You'll have made about $30 million with the Indians after pocketing $11.2 million this season. You mentioned signing an extension three weeks into the 2005 season, and how "it was horrible, I was on the phone with my agent all night. I don't want to get into that again." It would be wise not to repeat that. Most people wish they could have an all-night conversation with an agent that could lead to mega-millions. There are far worse late night phone calls than that. You're not asking my advice, but I'll give it anyway. If you don't like how this season feels with the pressure of your free agency, have your agents call the Indians. They'd love to talk, and unless your goal is to be the game's highest paid pitcher, you may like what they have to say. --
