For years, Pistons' fans cried about not having a star on the roster. They now have one and it would be silly to ask him to do anything but play the starring role. That's what he does best. It's cool that Iverson -- who really wants to win a championship -- is trying to adapt to his environment, to be more of a team player. This team has won for a long time playing like a team because there wasn't a bona fide star. Passed it up On Friday night against the Utah Jazz at The Palace, Iverson scored 38 in the Pistons' 120-114, double-overtime loss. It's the second time he's scored 30 or more since coming to Motown. The Pistons are 1-1 in those games. At the end of the first OT, Iverson had a chance to be Iverson with the score tied at 106. Instead of taking the potential winner with 1.4 left, Iverson passed to an open Rodney Stuckey, who missed a 3-point try. Clearly, the moment called for Iverson. "I wanted to take it," Iverson said. "But I looked at the way the defense was playing me. "I knew everyone on their team knew I was going to take the shot. They packed in so much. That's how Rodney got the look that he got. I didn't want to take a contested jump shot. ... You got to trust your teammate in those situations." In no way do we want Iverson to be a ball hog. He doesn't have to because he has a real team around him for the first time. But there are times you want Iverson to score 18 or 20 points in a quarter or at the end of the game to win it. He's that kind of talent. Iverson's real worth, though, will come in the postseason, when he can win a game by himself. "Let's face it, there are few guys in this league that you know can go out and win a playoff game," Pistons coach Michael Curry said. "They can carry a team to a playoff victory. In the past, we haven't had a player like that." Playoff performer The Pistons -- now 10-10 with Iverson -- always needed two or three players to get hot to win. But when a team is struggling, it's a lot easier when it has a Paul Pierce or a LeBron James. "To have a guy like that on our team looks good and feels good," Curry said. "Getting everybody accustomed to kind of different roles is a lot of a challenge, but that's a good challenge to have." Iverson brings more in the playoffs. In addition to his free throws, Iverson helps a team with points in the paint and transition buckets. "Those are the three areas you have to try to win in playoff games," Curry said. "Then, you're not just depending on making shots in the half court. "He helps us tremendously in all three of those areas."
