Juande Ramos surprised the squad by organising a training session with a difference on Thursday night - at the local karting track! The squad gathered at the hotel for a 6pm (5pm UK) departure to their third session of the day but had no clue where the coach was heading until it pulled up at the track. Everyone joined in including Head Coach Juande, First Team coaches Gus Poyet and Marcos Alvarez, the rest of the staff and the players. After practice laps and semi-finals, Benoit Assou-Ekotto took first place in the final from Marcos, Alan Hutton and Jamie O'Hara. "We talked with Juande and came up with the idea together," said Marcos. "Everyone loves to go karting, it's exciting, fun and everyone got involved. "Juande enjoyed it and we feel it's important to do these things, excellent for team spirit. It makes the team's bond stronger. "Also, when you are in a long training camp, it's important to do different things." Naturally, there were a few hard-luck stories about - none more so than Jamie. "To be fair, I was breezing it," he smiled. "I got to the last few laps and thought I might as well slow down and have a bit of a race, it was getting boring in front! "I slowed down because I wanted to have a good scrap with Alan Hutton - he's a good racer as well - and we ended up taking each other off! "It was great fun though." Marcos quickly added: "I should have won but I got pushed off the track in the final.
