Sunday 2nd December Premier League - Spurs 2 Birmingham City 3
A thoroughly miserable afternoon, which started badly, briefly seemed to have
brightened up, but then sank into full-scale embarrassment, as we were
humbled by the less-than-mighty Birmingham City. It's a damning indictment of
just how casually we approached our league campaign this season that Spurs
were the only side in the Premier League to give up six points to Birmingham.
That insult, combined with the injury suffered by Gareth Bale that would
eventually rule him out for the season, and the dismissal of Robbie Keane
that would put him out of action for three games confirmed that December
could only get better from here on in.
Thursday 6th December UEFA Cup - Anderlecht 1 Spurs 1
A trip to the delightful Belgian capital was next on the agenda, and though
Brussels at Christmas time is very much a must-visit, the game that followed
in the evening was perhaps not quite so appealing. Scrappy for the most part,
but Spurs showed fight and determination to come straight back from going
behind. Jermaine Jenas' surge forwards provided a chance for Dimitar Berbatov
to level the scores from the penalty spot.
The image that most sticks in my mind though, is that of Didier Zokora with
his back turned, waiting for a response from Paul Robinson as to the result
of the spot-kick. For all his faults, no one could ever accuse Zokora of not
having the requisite passion for the club.
Sunday 9th December Premier League - Spurs 2 Manchester City 1
A much-needed league victory came against high-flying City, as the
increasingly isolated Jermain Defoe again proved why he could not be faulted
for wanting first-team football, coming off the bench to nick a winner seven
minutes before the end.
Tuesday 11th December Bale out for three months
Our worst fears were confirmed when the club announced that Bale would not
return for at least three months. That three months would soon turn into the
rest of the season, and, assuming Bale returns for the first game of the
season in August, it will be his first competitive game for over eight months.
Saturday 15th December Premier League - Portsmouth 0 Spurs 1
In the middle of the fifth month of the season, we finally managed to secure
an away league victory. Of course, we chose a ground on which no away side
had won in the league all season to achieve this task, and the grit and
character shown by the players to control a game against a Portsmouth side
brimming with confidence was a joy to behold.
Tuesday 18th December Carling Cup Quarter Final - Manchester City 0 Spurs 2
The single most impressive performance of the season in my eyes, and I
include the victories over Arsenal and Chelsea in that statement. To see us
play away at a team that had won every single home game until that point,
with 10 men for all but the first 20 minutes was truly special.
The circumstances were perfect, an evening kick-off in Manchester was not
enough to put off the Spurs faithful, and thousands made the long trip up in
anticipation of reaching a second consecutive League Cup semi-final. When
Defoe gave us the lead just five minutes in, most of us felt that we would
need at least another seven to be sure of progressing. As it turned out, by
the time Steed Malbranque doubled our lead with eight minutes to go, City
were well and truly out of the game, despite their seventy-minute one man
advantage. The joy unconfined that greeted Malbranque's second, and the
confirmation of victory that it brought would have been the highlight of most
seasons.
Saturday 22nd December Premier League - Arsenal 2 Spurs 1
For all the positives that the previous fortnight had shown, there were still
some hurdles that we weren't quite ready to overcome, and ending a 15-year
hoodoo was one of them. So long has it been since we emerged from a trip down
the Seven Sisters Road with all three points, that I fear generations of
young Spurs fans will grow up refusing to believe it ever used to happen.
This was certainly the closest we'd come for a long while, with Robbie Keane
missing a penalty that would have put us ahead. Within minutes, we were
behind, and that, as they say, was that.
Monday 24th December Club announce Gunter signing
Our first signing of the January transfer window was confirmed in December,
and though Chris Gunter would not be the most important of our January
acquisitions, the four games he played for the club after signing suggested
he could one day have an important role to play at the club.
Wednesday 26th December Premier League - Spurs 5 Fulham 1
King returns
A particularly comfortable home victory combined with the long-awaited return
of Ledley King made for a welcome late Christmas gift for Spurs fans. We
faced Fulham at pretty close to their lowest ebb and, buoyed by King's
comeback, a rout ensued. A brace each for both Keane and Tom Huddlestone,
with Huddlestone's in particular impressing, and most of us assumed that six
goals in a game was certainly the most we'd see this month, little did we
know.
Saturday 29th December Premier League - Spurs 6 Reading 4
Whilst our 4-4 draws with both Aston Villa and Chelsea could legitimately be
called classic matches, this game was more like a comedy of errors. Though
there were goals of real quality, really and truly, this was a game which
exposed the defensive frailties of both sides, with Spurs only emerging
victorious due to our far superior attacking strength. Berbatov was the star
of the show of course, with four goals to his name, and, with the January
transfer window looming, many jumped to the inevitable conclusion that he had
picked a rather timely occasion to showcase his obvious talents.
Sunday 30th December Club issue statement on January transfer window
The subsequent speculation about Berbatov's future in particular led the club
to issue a statement reinforcing their position on the matter. Though no
reference was made to Berbatov by name, phrases like "we are not a selling
club" and "we have players on long contracts" left little room for ambiguity.
