Talk to Ben Alnwick about the first time he stepped out at White Hart Lane and he cannot wipe the smile off his face. The date was December 3, 2005 and Ben was keeping goal for Sunderland in a Premier League clash against us. After 71 minutes, with the scores at 2-2 Robbie Keane was given a great opportunity to put us ahead for the second time in the game from the penalty spot, only for the Prudhoe-born stopper to produce a fine save to palm away the Irish captain’s effort. Michael Carrick eventually constructed a winning goal past Ben late on, but that spot-kick save still lives long in the memory and not just for our young goalkeeper. “Robbie still talks about it now,” admitted the 20-year-old. “I also give him a little reminder about it every now and again but he is a great guy and to be honest when he takes a penalty in training nobody can stop them. But when it mattered that day he scuffed it!” After a memorable White Hart Lane bow, the England Under-21 man is looking forward to the prospect of repeating the trick and getting back out there, only this time in a Spurs shirt. “It’s my favourite place I have played at,” he admits. “I have played 20 odd first-team games, including playing at Arsenal, but out of all of them White Hart Lane was by far the best. “I liked everything about it- the pitch, the atmosphere- the stadium is just fantastic. “I had no second thoughts about coming here, it was just a case of when can I join. Tottenham is a massive club which is on the up.
