Chris Hughton insisted the lads deserved full credit for pushing Chelsea all
the way in our 1-0 loss in the Premiership on Saturday - less than 48 hours
after our UEFA Cup exertions in Seville.
Chances were few and far between in a close first half and Petr Cech made the
first serious save at either end when he tipped over Mido's header five minutes
into the second half.
Chelsea scored what turned out to be the winner after 52 minutes when
Ricardo Carvalho strode forward from the back and unleashed a 30-yarder that
flew past Ricardo Rocha, leaving Paul Robinson unsighted as the ball zipped
past into the bottom corner.
Robinson soon denied Saloman Kalou but it was then Cech having to make the
saves - a fingertip around the post diving to his right to deny bright
substitute Adel Taarabt and then a carbon-copy of his tip over from Mido to
keep a Berbatov header out.
"We would have loved to have scored a late equaliser, especially after the
last couple of days," reflected assistant manager Chris at Stamford Bridge.
"Chelsea had one or two chances but we always felt we were in the game.
"I thought the lads were a credit to the club, not least those who played on
Thursday night as well. The fact that we finished so strongly and kept going
right until the final whistle is testament to them."
Asked if he was disappointed with the goal, Chris added: "Ideally we would have
liked to have put more pressure on Carvalho, but sometimes you have to give
credit to the strike. We are always disappointed to concede any goal, but the
team is disappointed, not a lot is being said in the dressing room - it's
something we'll look at when we get the opportunity."

Taarabt
