The Tottenham striker replaces the retired Kenny Cunningham and will lead out the side against Sweden on Wednesday. Keane did not expect to land the role but is now relishing the chance to lead from the front. "I'm very honoured and privileged to get it. I'm looking forward now to a new chapter in my career and Irish football," said Keane. "I didn't expect it. You always dream of captaining your country. I'm grateful and I'm really looking forward to it." Shay Given was also a contender for the role, but Steve Staunton felt the job should be given to an outfield player. "He's a world class player," said Staunton on the Spurs ace. "He's certainly up for the job. "Spurs gave him a lot of responsibility and I think he's handled it very, very well. Our lads respect him. "I had a good chat with Shay. Shay leads from the front anyway, I don't think he needs the armband.
