Okafor: I didn't expect to be traded
Bobcats' original draft choice says he has no hard feeling about being dealt.
By Rick Bonnell
GREENSBORO The trade was an absolute shocker to Emeka Okafor.
He didn't have an inkling the Charlotte Bobcats had made him available to the
New Orleans Hornets until his agent sent him a text reading, "Hey, man. I
think you're being traded. Call me!"
And with that, he was whisked away from a franchise for which he'd been a
foundation. Okafor was the Bobcats' first-ever draft pick, and five years
later, he was swapped for Tyson Chandler.
How secure was he that he'd remain a Bobcat?
"As secure as you can feel in the NBA, knowing that any moment (any player)
can be gone," Okafor said before Thursday's Hornets-Bobcats exhibition at the
Greensboro Coliseum.
The Bobcats had signed him to a six-year, $72million contract a year earlier.
The reasons for the trade were both basketball and financial; Chandler can
play center and power forward, while Okafor was strictly a center. And the
deal reduced the Bobcats' future payrolls by tens of millions.
"Comes with the territory," Okafor said of being up-rooted. "No hard
feelings."
Ironically enough, neither Okafor (sprained toe) nor Chandler (recovering
from ankle surgery) were able to play in Greensboro.
Asked to reflect on his time as the Bobcats' first star, he considers himself
lucky to have joined a franchise at its outset.
"It was an interesting experience and a privilege," Okafor said. "Being part
of a franchise from the ground up gave me a total understanding of how things
work."
He's excited about joining the Hornets, knowing this just about assures him a
playoff appearance next spring. But he wishes he'd had more time playing for
Bobcats coach Larry Brown.
"A great teacher, a great coach," Okafor said. "I regret only having one year
with him."

‧Brown said he'll use his bench liberally the first three or four
exhibitions, then start tightening to a true rotation starting in the Los
Angeles Lakers' two-game tournament.
‧Brown said he's happy with the progress of both draft picks (Gerald
Henderson and Derrick Brown), but he thought Henderson shot a little too much
at Cleveland. Henderson took 10 shots and made three.
‧The first half was played without a functioning shot clock above the
Bobcats' basket. The clock started smoking pregame, and the coaches agreed to
play with a single shot clock.
