Ryan Hollins Q n A
(On officially becoming the Bobcats newest player)
I’m very excited. It’s just the beginning -- it’s just the signing.
It’s taking care of business, and now I’m moving on to the next step.
(On wanting to be in Charlotte after working out for the Bobcats back in June)
I definitely wanted to be here. My natural work ethic is just working
hard and playing hard, and I felt that from the coaches once I got he
re. I know I worked hard in that [pre-draft] workout, and we came ove
r here and had summer league a little while ago. I‘m definitely exci
ted about being here, and I think it’s a great fit.
(On falling to the 50th pick in the NBA Draft)
I didn’t expect to be there. But my agent informed me that I could g
o anywhere from possibly 19 to 50, somewhere in that range. I heard t
hat [the Bobcats] had talks about moving up or trading to get me if a
t all possible. Those were the talks in the air and the way the draft
went. Nothing was set in stone, so it got to a point where I was hopi
ng I just kept [falling in the draft] so I could come to Charlotte. I
wanted to come to go to a team who I had worked out for, I wanted to
be with and who needed me, instead of going into a situation where ev
erything was new to me.
(On the benefits of being drafted later and going to a place he wanted to be)
It makes me focus on continuing to work hard, and stay hungry and hum
ble. I would do that regardless, but being drafted in that situation
keeps you very levelheaded. It’s definitely an opportunity to work h
ard, possibly get a chance to play and do some things to help the tea
m out. Just being drafted in that position gives you an opportunity t
o do that, and it gives you so much more to work for. If I accomplish
that, it means a lot more.
(On bringing more to the offensive or defensive end)
Definitely the defensive end. We have a lot of offensive weapons -- m
y job offensively will be playing off other guys, just making my open
shots, getting offensive rebounds, running the floor and things of th
at sort. My biggest thing is defense. With my athleticism, being able
to block shots and cover guys is important. In this league, I’ll cre
ate a lot of mismatch problems and be able to defend different positi
ons.
(On the irony of joining the Bobcats with Adam Morrison, whose college teams me
t in the 2006 NCAA Tournament)
That’s pretty crazy. He’s such a great competitor, and playing agai
nst him in that one game, he’s not like anybody I’ve ever seen. To
be on the same team as him is pretty cool. Every shot he puts up is g
oing in, and that’s pretty nice to be playing with a guy like that.
Once we got into summer camp though, we didn’t even mention it. It’
s all business now. It was a lot of fun playing with him, being on th
e same team and just competing out there.
(On meshing with current Bobcats players in summer camp)
I meshed great with those guys. I just paid attention to what they do
. I’ve seen their work ethic, how hard they play and what they’ve p
icked up by being here. I’m just trying to pick it up, play off thos
e guys. I’m definitely excited.
(On the disappointment of getting injuring his ankle during the Orlando Summer
League)
It broke my heart. I wanted to play so bad. It was tough sitting and
watching, but I know that there are definitely many more games to co
me.
(On what he learned by watching the summer league games)
Just watching guys get up and down. When you are not playing, you ge
t a chance to sit back and see the things that you need to do to get
on the floor or how you can help the team be successful. In that sen
se, it can help you.
(On how his ankle is feeling now)
It’s feeling great. I probably could have played towards the end, b
ut there was no reason to risk it. It wasn’t like a championship or
anything that was worth getting hurt over. I’m definitely going to
be ready to go once (training) camp opens.
