The queen of tennis defeated Jelena Jankovic in a highly contested match in Stuttgart today. It was reminescent of their rollercoster ride from the US Open 2006 meeting. Again, the Serbian had an opportunity to pry the match away on the verge of a 5-1 set from the debonair Belgian only to crumble inward with distress. Justine defeated Jankovic 7-6 (7-2) 7-5 in 1 hour 54 minutes. "I don't know what I have to do to beat her, this is the eighth time she has beaten me. The first set was really tough, we were both playing well. I didn't play that well in the tie-breaker, that was a crucial part of the game". - Jelena Jankovic The matches between Justine and Jelena are often times as much about impossible looking shot making as it is about the emotional balance from turbulence to cool confidence. Justine took command from the first point with no service problems in the early stages of the first set. Ms. Henin rallied hard and smooth to a 5-3 lead, but Jelena produced her best tennis to level the score. And it was Justine that was forced to climb back from dangling out of the first set to gain a decisive tiebreaker. Jankovic was overwhelmed with the tidal wave of the Justine Henin forehand groundstrokes. Justine won the tiebreaker 7-2. After a draining first set Justine found herself in a void of unproductiveness. Jankovic roared to life and a 4-1 lead, but confronted with an opportunity to win she folded inward. The anticipation of a lead and the moment to break Justine at 0-40 on serve was to be another phantom scoreline. Justine reeled in one more game for 4-2. Tensions were raised again as JH served to stay in the set from 4-5, but it was the conclusive momentum shift as Jankovic lost the next three games in a row. Final score 7-6(7-2) 7-5 in 1 hour 54mins Justine plays Tatiana Golovin in the big race day finale on Sunday from 13:00 hrs (CEST).
