Carlos Rodriguez: '...the most important win here.'
By Georges Homsi
Saturday, June 10, 2006
Carlos Rodriguez, who has been Justine Henin-Hardenne's coach for the past
ten years, was justifiably proud of the Belgian's third Roland Garros title.
How well did you think Justine played today?
Well, she wasn't at her best, but she showed that even when she isn't at the
top of her game, she can still win, and for that, she deserves a lot of
respect. Winning is always the main thing, but after that, you have to
analyze the quality of play so that you can improve it.
Today, Justine came back just at the right time in the second set, even if
you have to say that Svetlana did herself no favors. I thought that it would
end up going to three sets, since Justine didn't realize that Svetlana had
changed the way she was playing, varying the tempo and changing the rhythm.
Fortunately, Justine knew what to do in the end.
After she had to drop out of the Australian Open final, is her success today
all the sweeter?
It's Roland Garros that matters, not Australia. She won today, even though
there were times when she wasn't at her best.
How does this compare with her two previous French Open titles?
This is perhaps the most important win, since Justine didn't drop a set, even
though from the quarterfinals onwards, she didn't play as well as in 2003 or
last year. That, for me as a coach, is very, very important.
How well will she do at Wimbledon?
I don't know, I hope she'll do well. It'll be a very difficult tournament for
her, though, as it starts in two weeks, which means that she won't have much
time to rest and to prepare for it.
