She defeated Ai Sugiyama 6-2 6-1 in 71 minutes. The world's greatest one-handed backhand player will now face Argentine Gisela Dulko in the quarterfinals to be played on Thursday. It's been more than two year's since Justine played Ai, but the spirited 30 year old Japanese, who's reputation is based on her superb footwork, was out played by the bigger hitting #1 seed on Tuesday night. Sugiyama came into this 4th round match with confidence since picking up good form in Doha last week, and knowing that she was the victor in their previous meeting. She was also one of the few to defeat Justine back in 2003. The 4x grand slam champion used her immaculate passing shots, and out maneuvered Ai in solid shot variety rallies, despite the Japanese veteran holding her ground, and not backing off in the court. The Belgian was out to a 4-2 lead quickly, and finished off the first set 6-2 in 37 minutes. The scoreline didn't reflect the quality of the games, but second set featured great rallies as Sugiyama tried to counter attack Justine's flash. Sugiyama takes the ball very early, and generates pace off opponents, but double faulted under immense pressure in her service games from a charging Justine on every single point. Despite Justine losing a bit of focus at a 4-0 lead, which gave a few easy giving advantage points away, the Japanese folded like origami on serve as the Belgian champ converted her 3rd matchpoint. The second set went 6-1 in 34 minutes. Final score: 6-2 6-1 in 1h 11 min Justine -vs- Gisela Dulko in the quarterfinal Justine will have one day of rest after playing three days in a row. She will face Argentina's Gisela Dulko (WTA #29) on Thursday. This will be their first meeting.
