Wed Feb 28 15:48:41 2007
...
A starter in 27 games through the first 2-1/2 months of the season,
Williams has since fallen out of the regular playing rotation because,
as coach Mike Woodson put it, he isn't "doing enough of the dirty work
we drafted him to do."
...
"I'm going to stay on him to do [the dirty work] and his minutes will
continue to be based on that," Woodson said. "A lot of times matchups
have been the problem. It's tough to play him on some of the power
forwards that are really perimeter guys. They can put the ball on the
floor and shoot it, and it's tough to put him out there in those situations."
...
It's been even tougher for Williams to make the adjustment from being a
mainstay at Duke to a role player for the Hawks.
"I've always been one of the main guys on the team and I've always played
every minute of the game," said Williams, whose last starting assignment
was in a Jan. 10 loss to the Hornets in Atlanta. "It's hard to see where
[Woodson] is coming from now when he wants you to pick up fouls just to
pick up fouls. If you don't, the next thing you know you're sitting on the
bench watching. Sometimes I don't know if it's me struggling to understand
where he is coming from or what."
Opportunities will probably be limited if the Hawks stay healthy. The Hawks
are 12-12 since Josh Smith returned from hernia surgery Jan. 12 and Woodson
moved Williams to the bench. That 24-game stretch is the only time this
season that Woodson has had Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, Josh Childress and
Smith all playing together.
So if limited minutes is all that remains for everyone else, he said, those
players have to make the most of them.
"You can't blame it on minutes," Woodson said. "And that's the thing about
winning teams. They don't care about minutes. If you're a role player or if
you're a starter, good teams don't [complain]. If you're a role player and
you get 15 minutes a game, you have to make those 15 minutes the best you
can possibly make them. And I don't think these guys understand that yet."
