Dr. J to introduce Wilkins at Hall ceremony By CHRIS VIVLAMORE The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 05/23/06 Dominique Wilkins' boyhood hero will open the door to the Hall of Fame for him. Wilkins has asked Julius Erving to introduce him when he is enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in September. "I called Julius Erving, he's been more like a big brother to me," Wilkins said Tuesday. "He was more than honored. It's funny because he's a guy I grew up wanting to be like and he's introducing me. It's kind of mind-blowing." The long-time Hawk asked Erving two weeks ago to make his introduction. It didn't take long to get his answer. "I was nervous to ask him, really," Wilkins said. "But he said it would be an honor to bring you in without hesitation." Wilkins said once he found out that an introduction must be made by an existing member of the Hall of Fame, he knew who he was going to ask. His second choice was Clyde Drexler, another Hall of Famer. Drexler, who was also introduced by Erving, didn't mind taking a backseat. "We talked about how important Julius was to both of us," Wilkins said. Wilkins will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Sept. 9. The class includes Charles Barkley, Joe Dumars, Geno Auriemma, Sandro Gamba and David Gavitt. Wilkins finished with 26,668 points, ninth on the all-time list, and more than 23,000 of those points came as a Hawk.
