The 'perfect play' wins it By SEKOU SMITH The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 04/06/06 Josh Childress and the Hawks survived 47 minutes and 58 seconds of chaos to pull out two seconds of perfection Wednesday night. Childress scored the game-winning layup in the Hawks' 101-99 win over Minnesota at Philips Arena on a length of the floor pass from Zaza Pachulia after Ricky Davis scored on a layup to tie the game at 99-99 with 2.1 seconds to play. While the Timberwolves were crashing the boards in case Davis missed, Childress and Hawks reserve point guard Tyronn Lue were already sprinting up the floor. Pachulia, doing his best Michael Vick impression, heaved the ball to Childress in stride as he finished with a left-handed layup over Trenton Hassell as the clock expired. "I don't know what his 40-yard dash time is," Lue said of Childress after the Hawks, 23-51, snapped a three-game losing streak, "but we needed every bit of it tonight." Childress, a second-year forward and former Stanford star, had the presence of mind to let the ball bounce twice before touching it —- the clock doesn't start on an inbounds play until the ball is touched —- and to finish with his off hand on the left side of the basket. "It was the perfect pass, a perfect pass," a smiling Childress said afterwards. "You know on the game-winner everybody crashes, so when I saw that I just took off. Zaza made the perfect pass, and I was able to let it bounce and that was it." Childress had missed the second of two free throws on the Hawks' previous offensive possession to give the Timberwolves (31-44) a chance to either tie or win the game, so his game-winner was not only the perfect play but also the perfect way for Childress to redeem himself. "I was on the sideline watching, and Lue was telling Chils that if they scored then to just break for it," said Hawks forward Josh Smith, who scored 17 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, dished out seven assists and blocked three shots before fouling out with 7.5 seconds to play. "And as soon as Ricky made the shot, I saw Lue take off. I didn't even see Chils at first. But I've never seen them run that fast. It was like they were running from the police. It was so funny. "But Chils made a smart play by not touching the ball right away, and I knew he could finish with his left hand." The Hawks actually had to climb out of a 14-point hole to win the game. Their 25-2 run in the second quarter was the spark. They held the Timberwolves to a franchise-record low eight points in the quarter (28-8) and took a 47-40 lead into the locker room. But the Timberwolves, behind the play of Davis (game-high 33 points) and Kevin Garnett (27 points, 15 rebounds) battled all the way back to take 90-89 lead with 2:34 to play in the third quarter. The lead went back and forth the rest of the way, with the Hawks taking control at the end. Co-captain Joe Johnson (team-high 24 points) huddled them before Davis scored that last basket for the Timberwolves, neither team had any timeouts left so the Hawks' final play was cooked up on the fly.
