By David Teraoka
Japanese author Haruki Murakami sells books around the globe, with his works
(translated into almost 40 languages) making him a contender for the Nobel
Prize this year. But living in Hawai‘i, he feels like an average guy.
"When I'm doing [everyday] things, I think of myself as an ordinary guy. It's
important for me to think that way," Murakami said.
Looking relaxed in his plaid shirt and jeans, sitting in his modest office on
campus, he seems like a typical person. He enjoys ironing shirts, washing
cars and cooking.
A visiting writer for the Fall 2011 semester, Murakami is no stranger to the
islands. "I love this place very much ... Hawai‘i is a very good place for
me to work," he said. "I used to be on Kaua‘i. [It's] very beautiful, but
these days, I move to O‘ahu. It is very convenient."
Born and raised in Kyoto, Japan, Murakami began writing at age 30. He has
been awarded the International Short Story Award and the Asahi Prize for his
novels and short stories, but the fame is not something he enjoys.
He said he finds being rumored to be a Nobel Prize nominee "disturbing." "I
have my own readers, so I can live on through my writing. I don't need any
prize. Good readers are my prize. I try not to think about anything else,"
Murakami said.
PAST WORK
His new book, "1Q84," released in the U.S. yesterday, took three years to
write and is his longest book to date.
It released two years ago in Japan in three volumes, but the American edition
will be one book of over a thousand pages.
While writing the novel, Murakami didn't expect it to take so long. "I
[thought] I would be able to complete it in less than two years. But once I
started writing, I couldn't stop," he said.
The book follows the stories of two adults in Japan during 1984. Young Aomame
finds herself living a parallel life, while math teacher Tengo becomes
overwhelmed by a ghostwriting project. It is his first book written entirely
in third person.
"Kafka on the Shore," winner of the Franz Kafka Award in Germany, was his
only other novel to use this perspective. He views the style change as a
challenge. "The third-person voice gives me a wider perspective in my
writing. So I enjoyed it very much," he said.
Murakami's surrealist books have captivated readers of all age groups.
"I don't know why," he said, laughing. "I believe if the story is good,
anybody enjoys that story. There is no age, old or young. If it's a good
story, and it's riveting, it works. It should be an exciting story."
In Hawai‘i, Murakami is taking a break from fiction. He sometimes takes six
to nine month breaks to get ideas, and is currently writing magazine articles
and essays.
"My policy is if I don't want to write, I don't write," he said. "I have
never experienced writer's block."
Murakami also does English to Japanese translations, covering the works of
Raymond Carver and F. Scott Fitzgerald. When he does write fiction, he writes
for four to five hours every day, which is when all of the ideas come to him.
"I'm not a talker, I'm not a thinker – I'm a writer," he said. "I think when
I'm writing. Through the work of writing, I get the idea. I can make the
things clearer when I'm writing."
(F. Scott Fitzgerald)
FUTURE PLANS
At age 62, Murakami doesn't want to slow down anytime soon. His new Japanese
novel debuts in November, and he is thinking of writing another short story
collection. He is always looking for unconquered territory; it is one of his
favorite things about being a writer.
"There will always be a frontier," he said. "So if you cannot do anything
new, it would be boring."
Murakami also shared his thoughts on the current state of Japan. Regarding
the Fukushima disaster, Murakami has been critical of the Japanese
government's response. He wants Japan to see the disaster as an opportunity
to create a society without nuclear power.
"It might be the last chance for our country ... We should have our own,
original image. We have to set up a new value system," he said.
Murakami has also been thinking of writing about the disaster and feels a
personal responsibility to spread the word through his work.
"I must do something in my writing. That is my feeling," he said.
